The only thing that makes this story far fetched is that the Church would never give you a thousand dollar credit toward tithing for spending a thousand dollars at the mall, where only a percentage of that money would be going to the Church.

That reality should squash any notion of the rumor. The church subsidize macy's, or worse, the whore of suburban fare; The Cheesecake Factory? Laughable.

At first I didn't know that Pahoran had gone back and edited his opening post after a number of replies were given. I thought it was all linear. So, I got a huge laugh out of the "fact" that Pahoran admitted that it was only a joke, but everyone nevertheless came out wondering if there was any truth to it. :-)

Don't worry, Shades. Nobody really thinks there was any truth to it. Although of course you (and Backslider) would certainly like them to.

Which is nonsense. The Church owns the real estate; it doesn't get a "percentage," the retailers pay rent.

The only thing that makes this story far fetched is that the Church has never done anything remotely like it.

Retailers pay a minimum rent but also have a percentage rent component once a certain break point in sales is reached.
