Trying to eradicate "Mormon" is not only futile, it's also what's actually offensive. The reality is that Mormonism is what the movement's founder called it and there are many other churches with similar names. It's the height of arrogance and disrespect to suppose that:
Obviously, ancient Nephites did not have the English word "more," so Smith's etymology for "Mormon" as "More Good" is perhaps the easiest and most obvious proof that Mormonism is made-up.
- Nelsonite Brighamites have the authority to label an entire movement that includes several other churches that view it as apostate. Mormonism is a multi-denominational movement and as such, any one church that hails from it has no right to dictate how others refer to the movement as a whole. It would be like Temple Lot Mormons trying to dictate to Nelson.
- Nelsonite Mormonism is the only "church of Jesus Christ" denomination that should be referred to in this manner. There are scores of denominations that have this verbiage in their official names. They are humble enough to accept being called "Cogic" (for Church of God in Christ) or any other non-offensive variations.
- It ignores that some of the first names of Joseph Smith's church did not have Jesus in the name. So by Nelson's own metric, Joseph Smith made a "victory for Satan." Smith's church (which should not be necessarily presumed to be affiliated with the Nelsonite Brighamites) was called the Church of the Latter Day Saints for a while.
- Beyond trying to ban "Mormon," Nelson also wants to ban "LDS." His peevishness is forcing a lot of member-owned organizations the expensive task of renaming themselves, in a way that may not even be possible with web domain squatters and such. There's no real alternative to "LDS Living" and so that magazine has not renamed itself. Good for them.
