I do not understand your point about involving gays. Would you like to explain that?Moksha wrote: ↑Mon Aug 29, 2022 8:42 amI am glad the subsequent Duke vs Rider game was changed to a venue where that unacceptable behavior could be controlled and prohibited. BYU would have been right on it had it involved gays, but otherwise, they probably thought of it as a freedom of expression issue.

That constitutes one of the stupidest responses one could imagine. They were told of disruptive behavior and racial slurs during the match and didn't stop things right there and take care of it, and are admitting that's how they handled it? Acting as if they handled it appropriately? Are they complete idiots?“When [the] behavior was initially reported by Duke, there was no individual pointed out. Despite BYU security and event management’s efforts, they were not able to identify a perpetrator of racial slurs,” BYU said in a statement. “It wasn’t until after the game that an individual was identified by Duke who they believed were uttering the slurs and exhibiting problematic behaviors. That is the individual who has been banned. We understand that the Duke players’ experience is what matters here. They felt unsafe and hurt, and we were unable to address that during the game in a manner that was sufficient.”
The response should be, "we did the stupidest thing we could have done in that situation. We need to get some outside help in training our people how to handle this. In terms that may help everyone understand our degree of failure, in comparison we acted as poorly as the racist fan who thought it a good idea to use racism in our facility to attack a young athlete and threaten her physically. We failed in every imaginable way here. We need to fire every person who worked on behalf of BYU during the match and we need to retrain everyone associated with our sports programs."
THat's it. Nothing else should have been said.

They should’ve stopped the game right then and there. Period. Just stop playing for a goddamn minute, identify the perp, escort him out, and then charge him with making a threat or whatever. Where are the adults at BYU?

instead, they had a cop stand next to the Duke bench. if there's time for that, there's time to do what you suggested.Doctor CamNC4Me wrote: ↑Mon Aug 29, 2022 3:31 pmThey should’ve stopped the game right then and there. At my kids catholic high school, many years back, the cheer section at a basketball game thought up some inappropriate comments to yell. They thought if it came from one voice in a big group they could hide it, I suppose. Nothing was anywhere near what BYU apparently allows, but it wasn't "good sportsmanship."
At the first catcall, our principal walked over and stood on the floor in front of the benches and yelled to the kids to knock it off, or be suspended. He spent the rest of the game standing there, arms crossed, overseeing his students. Of course there were no more incidents.
BYU needs to hire better help. Or at least some security with a sense of decency.

Once again, church mentality comes shining through.
Rather than 100% odds of a small public scandal (by dealing with the problem directly, openly), the brass chose to roll the dice on a quiet solution and ended up with egg all over the faces of BYU and the Mormon church.
This was a bad outcome. For sure.
But, it also makes you wonder.
How many times does this type of racial heckling happen at BYU events?
How many times are dice rolled on a quiet solution, but we never hear about it because the desired result was achieved?
Just like the church's systematic process of hiding CSA.
It sucks to see the church take hit after hit, but these are self inflicted wounds.

More BYU behavior:
The NAACP states, “It is extremely disheartening to hear about what occurred at the Duke vs BYU Volleyball game Friday evening targeted at the only Black player on Duke's team.”
The organization says that it is not the first time that racist comments have been targeted towards Black players, and that such behavior should not be tolerated.
They state that Utah has a reputation for this behavior, and that “athletes do not want to play here because of racist comments and attitudes directed towards them.”

Following this incident, Kirton McConkie urged coaches and fans to deny that such a game ever took place and to inform the media that BYU does not play sports.

It is systemic in Mormonism. How long did Brad Wilcox give his talk involving the question that should have been asked and nobody stopped him? Years.

I did a Google search for a portion of the NAACP statement quote, to see if I could get the full thing, and the first result was about this most recent incident. Also though, amongst the first page results were:
March 2019 - "When it comes to racially abusive fans, the NBA has a Utah problem."
May 2021 - "Jazz fans have a reputation for inappropriate behavior."
October 2021 - "‘Widespread’ racial harassment found at Utah school district"
February 2022 - "A recent incident highlights Utah’s long and troubled history of racism"
This little light of mine...

Most active Mormons in the jello belt over 65 still hold to the teachings of that era. With the social and political climate of today they simple go under ground.Doctor Steuss wrote: ↑Mon Aug 29, 2022 8:43 pmI did a Google search for a portion of the NAACP statement quote, to see if I could get the full thing, and the first result was about this most recent incident.
