"I am greatly concerned that so many people seem to believe that it is completely acceptable to condemn, malign and vilify anyone who does not agree with them. Many seem eager to damage another’s reputation with pathetic and pithy barbs.”
Would labels like lazy learner, unruly children, and Lax Disciples be considered maligning and vilifying?

Do you actually believe the living prophet is valid and his words are worth following?
What did you make of President Nelson's story of a chief surgeon throwing a gangrene-covered scalpel into Nelson's arm during a fit of anger? Did it sound like a fiery plane over the Delta Airport?

ETA: I agree with Philo - we should entice them with "more gentlemanly manner and [] nicer words."
This.

It’s the civility I’ve been mentioning over here scattered throughout the thread.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=157279

We can all do better. President Nelson was right on target.

Society has splintered into many different and diverse interest groups. The question is whether we will all be able to live together in harmony without constant backbiting and fault finding.

We can try and be an example of that here.

I’m game. Philo, right on brother.

Daniel C. Peterson's, Lou Midgley's, Steve Smoot's, Mike Parker's, and all other apologist's prophet, seer, and revelator Russell M. Nelson noted in General Conference 2023:

“Civility and decency seem to have disappeared during this era of polarization and passionate disagreements. Vulgarity, faultfinding and evil speaking of others are all too common,” the 98-year-old Nelson said while seated on a chair (as he did at last October’s conference). “Too many pundits, politicians, entertainers and other influencers throw insults constantly. I am greatly concerned that so many people seem to believe that it is completely acceptable to condemn, malign and vilify anyone who does not agree with them. Many seem eager to damage another’s reputation with pathetic and pithy barbs.”
This describes the Mopologists blogs, papers, and online "services to the church and Jesus" to perfection. They have accused (ignorantly and grossly incorrectly) Jonathan Neville and others who see things differently, though remaining faithful Latter Day Saints, of everything evil and maligned and vilified them non-stop FOR YEARS, not to mention non-members such as Gemli. Even the evil speaking against other publishers you don't like, like Signature Books.

All eyes are watching you now Mormons. Do you actually believe the living prophet is valid and his words worth following? Now you can PROVE you have a testimony through how you interact online. We await the verdict over the next 2-3 decades of your changed behavior, if there is any.
Though I no longer believe Nelson is a prophet, I will attempt to put his words into action myself. I am also guilty of sometimes losing my decorum and really giving a fabulous raving rant. Though deserved, in my opinion, I will try to clean up my own presentations, though I will continue to go straight to the problem(s) I see with leadership pronouncements, revelations, etc., as well as weird interpretations, etc. and call them out on them. I shall make a better effort to do it in a more gentlemanly manner and use nicer words. How about it Mopes (Mormon apologists)? You gonna let an apostate outdo you for civility and better words to those who disagree with you?

Boylan has already ignored Nelson... and it only took a mere two days! no surprise. I can't wait to see if other "Good Covenant Path Mormons" in the Mopologist camp try to "follow the prophet" or do they no longer consider it necessary to believe in D & C 1 anymore? Are these guys really covenant pathers? I have my very serious doubts. Do they really believe the Gospel they proclaim? I have my serious doubts. Do they really believe in Jesus? I have my serious doubts.

I would be pleasantly surprised, but surprised nonetheless, if the Mopologists and other defenders of Mormonism recognise their prophet's words as being intended to apply to them.
There won't be any such recognition. As I pointed out 20 years ago in bullet point #11 in my essay on Internet Mormonism vs. Chapel Mormonism:
  • Chapel Mormons tend to believe that a prophet's words apply to everyone he's addressing. Internet Mormons believe that a prophet's words may not apply to at least some of the people he's addressing.
So, it's a given that the Kiwi57 and Lou Midgley types naturally assumed that the prophet was addressing everyone BUT them.

President Nelson didn't mince words in expressing his displeasure with the Mopologists. It was a harsh rebuke and much needed spanking.

Let's see if the Mopologists will obey the Prophet.
"I am greatly concerned that so many people seem to believe that it is completely acceptable to condemn, malign and vilify anyone who does not agree with them. Many seem eager to damage another’s reputation with pathetic and pithy barbs.”

“How we speak to and about others at home, at church, at work and online really matters.”

Nelson besieged members to “interact with others in a higher, holier way.”

The president urged members to “lay aside bitterness … to cease insisting that it is your way or no way….Now is the time to bury your weapons of war.”

“If your verbal arsenal is filled with insults and accusations, now is the time to put them away,” Nelson said.

And a church filled with such peacemakers, he said, could be “a light on the hill.”

I’m not sure how anyone takes this seriously. Following Jesus basically requires one to do all the things Nelson is opposed to because “my way or the highway” was Jesus’ thing, according to legend. Nelson himself has filled his life’s work with efforts to condemn others who disagree with him. “Repent or you’ll be lost and wasted” is not very interesting anymore but it was supposed to be the repeated and vilifying message of all who favor Jesus. If believers don’t tell everyone that they need to come to Jesus or hit the road to wait for eternal hellfire, or whatever, then what’s the point?

If Jesus didn’t lead the way filling his verbal arsenal with insults and accusations unwilling to put away such attacks how are his followers supposed to follow him and not follow suit? Are sinners not sinners anymore? Are lgbtq not sinners anymore? Can one come to the Father while opposed to Jesus, his teaching and religion or not?

Don’t get me wrong it certainly sounds encouraging when believers send out messages like this. But what does it mean when they have nothing but condemning speech to follow this up? Is Nelson renouncing his religion now? Does he now agree there is more ways than one to achieve the goal of exaltation?

OMG... far more prophetic than we've seen since Mormonism 1978...

RFM/Consiglieri has a much bigger view of this most recent conference and I think it is brilliant. The whole theme of conference was along these lines.

1.) lay aside bitterness. Don't be upset. Don't feel cheated. Don't hold grudges
2.) interact with others in a higher, holier way. forgive. be kind.
3.) No matter what Church leaders do, stay in your own lane.
4.) If you you have a problem with the leaders, be silent or get out

These themes were over and over.

And This just on the heels of the SEC fiasco.

The Leaders of the Church aren't worried about how you speak of critics. They are telling the members who were bothered by the SEC fiasco that "your job is to echo what we say or to remain silent"

And I think RFM is 100% right!
