Is there reason to be sure of or clear about the judgment of which prophet was the most racist?

There are indeed a lot of racist Mormon prophets to choose from, do you have another in mind who may edge brother Brigham out?

There’s an old Harold B Lee movie?
You haven’t seen it?

Drumdude, I did not want to propose that you are wrong but I am inclined to think the matter spread widely.

It is disappointing that these supposed prophets were not using their claimed gifts of prophesy to overcome the racism of their day. They were more concerned with telling each generation that they would be the generation which sees Christ visit earth.

I have never found the Mormon apologetic that they were products of their time to be very effective. The reason Jesus was so popular was the belief that he was going against the norms of his time. Would we not expect a true prophet of our time to similarly lead against the crowd?

Not sure about you but it’s definitely a big part of my skepticism and criticism of church leaders.

I see that Dr. Peterson is bellyaching over the fact that I wondered if his new movie was recycling the costumes from “Witnesses.” He writes:
Over at the Peterson Obsession Board, my longtime Malevolent Stalker points out that the clothing used in Six Days in August (which is primarily set in rural frontier America during the period 1828-1844) is embarrassingly similar to the costuming in our previous film, Witnesses (which is primarily set in rural frontier America during the period 1828-1844). But I have a defense against this complaint: Most people on the American frontier during the Jacksonian era of the early Republic were simply unable to afford the leopard-skin tights, sequined propeller beanies, leather lace-up Brunello Cucinelli hiking boots, Sergeant Pepper’s jackets with epaulets and tassels, and retro designer sunglasses that the Stalker favors for daily wear. We’re just trying to be accurate to the place and the period.
Oh, so “accuracy” is what they’re going for? The people of that era always wore clothing that was freshly pressed, brand-new, and spotlessly clean? I mean, for heaven’s sake: he’s proudly posting an image of BY at work doing some kind of manual labor, and both BY and the guy in the leather apron are *immaculately* clean:

Image

Is the guy’s hat brand new? It’s like they’re doing work in this area for the first time! It’s like this is a workshop from out of a catalog! Or, perhaps more fittingly, it’s like some dopey, scrubbed-clean mock-up out of the Ensign. I guess the operative word here is “trying” to be “accurate”?

“Witnesses”’ depiction of the historical era was totally unconvincing: everything was over-lit (remember: they didn’t have electric lights in the early 1800s) and it’s as if dust, grime, and smoke were completely absent. The characters in “Witnesses” are cleaner and more blemish-free than the upper-crust characters in Amadeus or Barry Lyndon. I guess they had professional dry cleaners on the frontier in Joseph Smith’s time?

There are lots of movies with budgets large and small that depict historical eras convincingly. But those are movies that are more interested in being “art” rather than Mopologetic propaganda.

When I was about to have my first look at the first complete rough cut of Witnesses — before the sound had been “sweetened” (as professionals in the industry term it) and before the colors had been evened out — I remember thinking, “But what if I don’t like it? What if I hate it? What if it’s terrible? What then?” I haven’t been an enthusiastic fan of some Latter-day Saint filmmaking, and I worried that this effort of ours might just be one more addition to list of mediocre, amateurish movies. I knew that our filmmakers were conscientious, meticulous professionals but, still, what if it simply fell flat?

My wife and I had been present on set for some of the filming. We had been over the script multiple times, suggesting alterations here and there, and reading subsequent revisions. We had been involved in several of the principal casting decisions. It was such a relief, when it concluded, to be able to say to myself “That was pretty darn good!”
I think he confuses looking technically good with having artistic value. You can capture the trees in 4K resolution with a $100,000 camera. You can color balance the skin tones and EQ the audio until the product is glossy. But if the content is still propaganda, people will very quickly pick up on it.

The casting choices say all you need to know. It’s a whitewashed version of church history designed to keep people in the church and gloss over the troubling reality of Mormon history.

You can capture trees in 4K resolution for less than $1K.

Yes but the bit rate and compression tends to make it look like ass on a 55 foot screen.
