Kish,

Say what you will about JD....his videos on truth claims, with folks like Sandra, Ritner, Bushman, Palmer, Quinn, Metcalf and DV....etc will be priceless to future historians, they will age with time. He knows that and slows everything down for "history," he gets that and that is his genius. Your critiquing him in the negative, comes off weak. You haven't earned the right yet. It is like a new hire criticizing his boss.

I tried to listen to your podcast today while driving, to many "I" s......I don't care about you (from a podcast point of view, I care about you as a person)....I care about the subject. I kept fast forwarding trying to get to it and really never found it.

My two cents.

I have been a fan of Mormon Stories from the beginning. In this episode, I share something of my history with John Dehlin and Mormon Stories. Then, I critique something he did recently that I think is an unfortunate tendency on Mormon Stories. It is a great show but not a perfect one by any means.
For those of us without 40 minutes to watch the video, will you please tell us what he did recently that is an unfortunate tendency on Mormon Stories?

How dare you criticize the patron saint of ex Mormonism!
I figure Rosebud dropped by. ;-)

Wasn't 4 parts. Wasn't 4 hr long parts. Didn't have a guest you constantly interrupted to restate exactly what the guess just said. Didn't mention your Ph.D.

Still 10/10.

Getting my first negative reactions to a video, which was absolutely predictable seeing who the video is about!
How many downtoots have you gotten?

- Doc
Just one, but it was one of the first two ratings!

I’m guessing Midgley, kiwi57, the Afore, Jacob Hansen and Stephen Bukkake Smoot all downvoted you?
LOL. No. I don’t think so.

A small critique if I may? Viewers on YouTube have become accustomed to content providers editing their videos so repetitive pauses, hmms, ahs, uhs, and whatnot don’t slow down the viewing experience. You have good content that’d be helped by some editing that’d keep your content moving along in a concise manner.

Another is if you plan to do this for the long-run, you might as well set up your space that reflects you, your background, and the professionalism you bring to the audience. A nice mic and desk in a room that looks like a podcaster’s studio would help you help us as the viewer want to have Coffee with Kish. Also, a little avatar/logo and opening musical ditty ups your game.

Thanks, Doc! All great suggestions and in my plans. It may take a little while. I am working on the editing aspect, trying to weed out tangents and pauses. Did more editing on the next video coming out.

On the mic- I am using a shotgun mounted on the camera, which is an improvement on the one built into the camera, but not as nice as a Shure SM7B, which I own. The problem with the Shure is that I would have to record the audio separately and sync the two. I will eventually get a mic pre that attaches to a hot shoe on a nicer camera. This camera has a cold shoe. Currently I am looking at a nicer camera that has a hot shoe.

In any case, yeah, everything you mention is great advice and in my plans. It may take a little while, though. I decided to jump right in and work on the details instead of waiting to have everything perfectly set.

Thanks for watching and thanks again for the great tips!

If you’re talking about the length of the podcasts, I think they are kind of long. At the same time, I like that John allows people to tell their full story, which probably does take a long time. I do think that by now, most of the listeners are fully aware of the milestones in the life of a Latter-day Saint, such as the priesthood offices, mission, blessings, temple marriage, etc., and could be edited a bit to shorten them— unless there are special details to mention.

Whenever I read a book about the life of a LDS, it would be nice if I could just skip over having to be taught about Mormonism for the millionth time.

It’s not about me though, is it?
Maybe that stuff should go in an appendix so that those who need it can flip to the back to read it, but it won’t slow down those who don’t need it.

Thanks, Markk! People have different views on the insertion of the self. Some like it, others don’t. I had a very specific criticism of something John does that impacts a limited range of viewers. I think it is fair to point that out. I have been an observer and interlocutor in this community for decades, so I feel OK about saying something. It is not as though I went out guns blazing to trash MoSto.

I wanted to point out the ridicule of things active LDS hold sacred and why this might not appeal to those viewers. It’s his choice to do, of course, and personally I still enjoy the occasional MoSto episode.
