It's also a convenient cover for "I want it to be true, so I'm going to say I've had a spiritual witness."

Then those people know they are engaging in wishful thinking.

Charity, two people can have what they believe to be a spiritual witness, and have those "witnesses" completely conflict with one another. While a true spiritual witness might exist, there might also be numerous things attributed to spiritual witness that are not in fact anything of the kind.

I agree completely with what you just said. There are false witnesses. Which is why we have been cautioned to study, ponder, pray, listen and discern.

Including what you believe to be "spiritual witness."

Then it just becomes a "my spiritual witness can beat up your spiritual witness" game, where no one really wins.

The winners and losers are not here on message boards. It is in the eternities. Those who have not been diligent will be the losers when they have listened to the wrong spirit.

You know charity - you should write a comic book and call it Mormon man and let him say most of what you post here.

God removed his protection from Joseph Smith, and the mob killed him. By your reasoning, the mob was listening to the right spirit.

The mob klled him because it was necessary for him to seal his testimony with his blood. By your reasoning, God removed His protection from Jesus, sop that must mean the Romans were listening to the right spirits. ??????

Sheesh, I hate Joseph Smith-Jesus Christ comparisons. It does nothing to distance the Mormon Church from the criticism that it deifies Joseph Smith.

The mob killed Joseph Smith because he pissed them off. Plain and simple.
The road is beautiful, treacherous, and full of twists and turns.

I assume this is hyperbole (at least I hope it is)....(?)

Ummm, charity? Did you not realize that Jesus was God while he was on earth? And he allowed himself to be crucified, as part of his shouldering the Atonement for us all?

No, it's not at all the same thing. But then, with your worship of Joseph Smith, I'm not surprised you don't realize the blasphemy you just stated.

Are you saying the mob wasn't pissed at him? They just killed him for kicks and giggles?

I'm saying it isn't quite so "plain and simple," nor necessarily only "him" at which they were pissed.

I dunno. I'd almost argue it was litotes.

What I'm more interested in though are the implications of this statement: "The mob klled him because it was necessary for him to seal his testimony with his blood."
From the Ernest L. Wilkinson Diaries: "ELW dreams he's spattered w/ grease. Hundreds steal his greasy pants."
