In reality- and despite the fact that certain categories of anti-Mormon and fool vomit up this same old chestnut with startling regularity- that Joseph Smith used a number of practices to translate- and varied them over time. That's why so many conflicting reports exist.
The actual method of translation, however, never varied. Joseph translated by the gift and power of the Holy Spirit.
