The reason I tend to believe it's authentic is that, in the past, when Scratch has come up with "intel" that ended up not having solid proof, defenders of the faith were very quick to comment on it, sneering and snorting over Scratch's and his followers' gullibility. I find it impossible to believe that, if this intel were false, that defenders of the faith would not be engaging in the same behavior right now. But MDD is not even allowing mention of the rumor.

They are wondering if this is all some huge scam, and DCP and the other MI participants are off somewhere having a good laugh at our expense.

I have to admit, it is an interesting theory.

So this could be a grand gambit to smoke out the confidential informants by leaking disinformation to Scratch, then when the time is right to pounce for both the fatal kill and to throw egg on the face of Dr. Scratch and his minions.

Let's make this into twelve episodes and try to sell it to the BBC. We've already got an ample supply of vintage BYU clothing and sufficient Jell-O to pull it off.

We are not in a court of law, where every claim of wrong-doing that the jury has not yet formally accepted has to have the label 'alleged' hung round its neck.

We are instead in the area of practical judgements. I can't see anyone who has read DCP's writings and is familiar with their context over the years doubting for a moment, as a matter of practical judgement, that the email posted by Scratch is by DCP. The possibility that it is a fake is like the possibility that Nephites actually existed on the American continent as described in the Book of Mormon: non-zero, and certainly not ruled out by the laws of formal logic, but in practice negligible.

I repeat my admiration for the tactic produced by bcspace earlier on: even if it becomes publicly known that DCP has been removed from his position at the Maxwell Institute, bcspace holds open the possibility that the emails posted here are still fake, thereby avoiding the need to acknowledge that Scratch was right about his access to inside information.

Truly neat! The opportunity to see such casuistic dexterity in action is one of the reasons why I take the time to read this board.
