Hey Blixa,
Great entry on "them all being Mormons". I'll get my less intelligent recap out sometime this week on this thread. Sigh....only 1 episode to go before the wait starts again. :(

.....a liberal Mormon whose life has been broken and limited by the impossible demands of both trying to serve and change her church.
Not to derail the thread, but this is what is known as an Apostate. It is not a members right to change the church.

For once, Gaz, just stick a sock in it.
Good grief.

Yes, I loved the way this episode delved into the complicated hopes and fears about the "afterlife" and what will happen there. The pain on Barb's face as she tells her mom that she doesn't know if she'll see her in the next life, who her mom will be with, where they'll all be (and I'm guessing Barb doesn't know whether SHE is the one destined for the CK by living the "principle" or her MOM is for sticking to the "real" church, but I'm guessing it's the latter, I'm beginning to suspect Barb has willingly given up what she believes to be the "true" road to exaltation for Bill).
And the poignancy of seeing her mom willing to sacrifice time with her daughter in THIS life when she, as well, doesn't know if they'll be together in the next.
This is, indeed, the cruel dagger of Mormon theology, and why I often refer to it as "involuntary divorce" - only not just from your spouse, but from your entire family. We recently discussed this on another thread where Coggins chastised me for obviously never having grasped Mormon theology at all due to my reference to the "involuntary divorce", but to interpret it any other way makes no sense. The LDS church says it is the ONLY church with the authority to make SURE you're not divorced from your family due to death. They emphasize that non-temple marriages have a divorce decree embedded within them - TILL DEATH DO US PART.
I know that my parents suffered emotionally when I left the church for this very reason. They mourned the loss of me as their daughter in the next life. I don't know if they still suffer over that. We just can't talk about it. At least my family still wants to enjoy me in this life, even if I'm doomed to a lower kingdom (or maybe outer darkness, who knows, it's all so vague) in the next.

We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

Beastie....I'm pretty sure there's going to be an eternal party in one of the kingdoms (the one for hypocrites like liz and evil nevermos like me....lol) and you have a standing invitation to that party. Whiskey and hors' deveures for everyone!

Yep. This episode floored me. I mean what is more harrowing than watching two women struggle over being separated for eternity, over a "principle" they both believe in and are in fact both practicing (either in this life or the next)?
I fear for Barb. She has no place to turn: returning to "the church" is a giant step back for her, a worse mistake in my opinion than staying with Bill (and I don't say that lightly). And I pity Nancy, I can't just lump her in with the truly viscious and smug Cindys. She's been victimized by the culture, too, even if she seems to have willingly submitted.
And my feelings are so engaged with these characters, talking about them as real people I have "fears" for because they essentially are actual people I've known.

I'll get my review out sometime...but I can't wait for the storyline to play out....I'm thinking Barb may try to make amends with her family somehow....could that mean putting on the garments? I'm suprised they haven't had garments on the show yet (that I recall) and it would be a good way to get those outta the closet too.....on the body of the lead actress.

Be there or be square!!
Hey, if I "wake up" after my death in some afterlife, I'll spend the rest of eternities in a state of shock, anyway. ;)
