And then Bednar’s “having the faith to not be healed” nonsense. I guess he’d say the girls that perished in the flood showed the faith to not be saved.
Sheesh. What a dumb thing to say.

Yesterday I used the word "adolescent" to describe some of the silly things said here.

Exhibit A.

Are you mocking these young girls and others that perished? If so, that's sick.

Elder Bednar would never say that in reference to this horrific event which occurred as a result of this storm.

You need to get out more and observe and experience the real world.

But he did in effect say that to believing Mormons who hoped desperately to be healed of the diseases that might be causing them great pain and fear, and were praying that a blessing might cure them.

Yes, and then there's that one of many gems from Jeff Holland. You know, the one about driving with his son along a road in the forest when he comes to a fork in the road. They prayed for guidance about which direction to go, and that sneaky old Elohim sent them down the wrong one, as a test of faith stupidity.
Yes, the wrong roads talk. Sometimes the holy ghost purposely gives incorrect information so a person can get to the correct decision quicker. There is an answer for everything if you practice Mormon pareidolia.
I remember that story. That was the most convoluted, thoroughly bad piece of reasoning I've seen in a long time.

Bednar said it to a couple where the man was dying of cancer and had requested a blessing. He prefaced his blessing with the caveat about having the faith to not be healed, just to cover for the event that his blessing didn’t heal the cancer sufferer. Hearing his lack of confidence in a blessing’s success must have been a great comfort. He then glorified his own behaviour by retelling the anecdote publicly in a devotional in 2013.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Yes, essentially that is true.

But to make the association/connection that was made in this instance was inappropriate and in my opinion juvenile.

No nuance, no deeper analysis as to how God works in the world writ large.

That's what is really sick to me. He actually bragged about this incredibly convenient 'out' he gave himself. Talk about drawing the bullseye everywhere and anywhere the arrow falls.

All I would say to this...for those that are listening in... go back and read the complete context in which Elder Bednar taught this principal.

It wasn't "sick".

I think it is sick and twisted given what they promised for decades and decades about such blessings. The inconvenient truth was that such blessings were as ineffective as masturbation is for procreation. So in his apostle shake-and-bake, Bednar put it upon the sick and afflicted person--have faith to die!!! It could not have been more clearly a capitulation than if the entire Big 15 had admitted that they have no authority from God (if there is such a being).

You, of course, are completely free to think what you want. In the instance that is being discussed here I'm thinking that it is not directly applicable.

I think that our first thoughts ought to be to pray for all those affected by this storm and if we feel the prompting to help in some small way, to do so.

I'm not sure where and why this thread went off the rails and someone made the decision to run an Apostle out of town on a rail.

Twisted stuff.

This is the talk Bednar gave at the devotional in 2013
Three months later, John underwent a surgical procedure to remove a large tumor in his leg. Two days following the operation, I visited John and Heather in the hospital. We talked about the first time I met John in the mission field, about their marriage, about the cancer, and about the eternally important lessons we learn through the trials of mortality. As we concluded our time together, John asked if I would give him a priesthood blessing. I responded that I gladly would give such a blessing, but I first needed to ask some questions.
I then posed questions I had not planned to ask and had never previously considered: “John, do you have the faith not to be healed? If it is the will of our Heavenly Father that you are transferred by death in your youth to the spirit world to continue your ministry, do you have the faith to submit to His will and not be healed?”

Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
