The reason he is bringing this up is obviously because Will knows he got busted. Nomad/Will lied about this. I pointed out that we know for a FACT that Silver Hammer is William, and that he is posting from the same node as usual. The one not based in Europe.

How do you know that for "a FACT"?

This is the second time that you've made such a statement, Kevin, regarding IP locations and/or "nodes". You do realize that you are implying that admin disclosed the information, don't you?

I just want to be clear on whether or not you are posturing or throwing the admin team under the bus.

It is possible to obtain IP addresses of other posters without being an admin and without resorting to hacking or hiring a PI. I could do it, but I have not and do not plan on doing so. If you want some ideas on possible techniques, I could disclose that too.

He stated that a "Little birdie told me".

I will wait to see what he has to say about it.

Not gonna tip my hand too far, but there are ways to find these things out beyond tapping favors from the admins. Just curious though, what's wrong if admins point out two posters are actually the same, based on digital address? That's the whole point of having a system that monitors IP addressing.

I think it should not only be permitted by the mods, but it should be required that they out everyone who is doing it. Think of the time it would save everyone. You make it sound like this is some serious infringement of privacy or something. This is a private forum, and anyone coming here using multiple accounts from the same computer ought to know their attempt at privacy has already been compromised, and they cannot change the fact that numerous mods will know instantly that they are up to no good.

Why don't you ask Shades what's wrong with it?

I disagree here. If the mods outed everyone posting from the same IP address, they might also unwittingly disclose the location of two posters who are not the same but happen to use the same library / ISP in the same area. Also, it's trivial for a sock puppet to use a proxy and create the illusion of coming from another computer. Thus we have plenty of room for false positives and false negatives. I don't see much value in it. Indeed, in some sense the most value is to be had in the current system because it invites complacency for foolish sock puppets who can easily be outed by anyone who cares to do so.

I am interested by this news, though not overly concerned by it. Is this due to a loophole in the board software, or is it an inevitable feature of a message board of this kind?

Mods (and in particular Dr Shades) - were you aware of this?

Actually, there are things you could do to make obtaining this information difficult. Besides using a proxy, you could change various settings on your browser or use a very stripped-down browser like lynx / links. You could even surf with telnet.
