I can't choose to believe something that I believe is false. I just can't make myself do it.

Wish I could.

Yeah, but the question is how did you come to believe it was false in the first place? (Keep in mind that we're talking about things for which there isn't common knowledge or evidence - I can't make myself believe that gravity doesn't exist either, for instance).
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Some guy I met told me that God was dead. And I thought about it and agreed with him.

Sort of the same when my older brother told me my parents were drunken Santas every Christmas Eve. Same sort of "aha!" experience.

Oh... I didn't think you were a deist. Don't you have to believe in god before you can make an assessment for whether he's alive or dead? He can't be dead if he never existed in the first place.

Actually I was a deist for quite a while. Does it matter if I'm a deist, an atheist, an agnostic, a theist? The thing is I can't just choose to believe in God. I can't make that choice!

I have explained, I think repeatedly, why I can NOT make a choice to believe. I want someone to tell me how I CAN choose.

It doesn't matter for the purposes of this thread; I was just curious. It seems you're being inconsistent. If you believe god is dead, then you believe in god, and that he's dead.

But yes, it might help if you were to read the whole thread. :D

Well then I might have something relevant to add, and don't want to raise any expectations for me!

Schmo, I've never said that I didn't believe in God at one point. I did. It was not connected to any religion.

But I'll read the thread...... later....... cause I'm lazy.

And tired.

The idea that “God is dead” was notably introduced by
Friedrich Nietzsche.

WikipediA offers further comment/analysis.
