In the end though, the reason he was not added (per the discussion, although he was indeed added after the discussion took place) was because he isn't considered a "Christian" martyr. Your use of Wiki in order to establish whether or not Joseph was a martyr just seems a tad silly to me.

No I don't think he was a martyr as it's what they call frontier justice. GA's in Utah that were called to defend murders in the 1800's would give speeches to the the Mormon jury that if a man slept with another man's wife then it was okay to kill that person.
But regarding the incident with carthage: didn't Joseph shoot people? And once again those crazy F-troop angels were goofing off and Joseph took a bullet or some bullets and they didn't catch him when he fell. He should have exercised the faith of Daniel.
