I work for the largest Hospitality company in the world. We offer hard and soft core "Adult Entertainment" options. Marriott gets the same programming. Its all from Lodgenet.
Also in Vegas, a 7-11 store was/is owned by a Mormon family friend located near UMC. He had no problem with alcohol, cigarettes, etc but ethically speaking I can't see how this should be allowed.
Historically, houses of ill repute were owned and operated by Mormon prophets.
What in the world is wrong with people? Don't business travelers have laptops? Ever heard of the internet? Sheesh!
Is there anyone that actually watches an entire movie???

So... could Bro Marriott hold a temple recommend while his hotels peddle pornographic movies? Is there a problem with store owners that sell beer and wine? Or lawyers that defend murderers or pedophiles?
As far as I can see, it's okay for the owner of a smut store to hold a temple recommend. Or the producer of a pornographic movie to hold a temple recommend. All they have to do is pay their tithing and be honest in their dealings.
I'll go ahead an take issue with the "lawyers defending murderers or pedophiles" part. Defense lawyers play an important part in guaranteeing that criminal defendants receive the due process granted to them under the Constitution. There is absolutely no moral deficiency in those who play that part. I would happily accept the position of public defender to fulfill this role for those accused of crime, and have no second thoughts about doing so. Please don't confuse the attorney with the criminal.
I was sniping at Robert with that one, skippy. Sorry you were caught in the crossfire.

No worries. But it wouldn't have caught Bob, either - he deals on the civil side of the law (antitrust, environmental, land use, and such), and not criminal.

It's definitely a different environment. What amused me last time I was in Las Vegas (July - it was oppressive) were the bus-stop signs advertising the "best methadone clinic" in the valley. I'm sure it's no laughing matter for an addict, but it struck me as funny.

"Through the 1970s, Mormons who worked in the casinos were not eligible for temple recommends ...
By the mid-1980s, employment by a casino was no longer a bar for a temple recommend for a Mormon otherwise in good standing. Moreover, by the end of 1989, Las Vegas had its own Mormon Temple. Built on Sunrise Mountain ... "

You think July is oppressive, just be grateful you weren't here in August (Yikes!). There's a mega-church off the freeway called (I think) "Central Christian." They have a sign that can be seen from the freeway with events, etc. I always make it a point to see what's going on as they have housed some AFSP conferences in the past. About a month ago, they had a sign that said something along the lines of "Let's talk about SEX! And let's talk about it long and hard."
After living here for almost two decades, this city still manages to make my jaw drop on occasion.

Great find! I had no idea that it was once an issue.

So... a TBM could own a smut store, make pornographic movies, be a porn movie reviewer, or own a brothel (in states or countries where brothels are legal), and it not effect his temple recommend. Right?

I imagine that one could not be a porn movie reviewer. And as for the smut store owner, I'd imagine that would require looking at porn (at some point, you would have to either be in the store or review what merchandise your investment was selling). Owning a brothel on the other hand… as long as after each job you told your employees to “go and sin no more” you should be good.

Okay, now that I keep seeing the title of this thread, I keep reading ||Mormon bar|| owners. Like there's such a thing as a "Mormon bar". Where they serve Sprite, decaffeinated Coke and fruit punch and the occasional Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers or something. It makes me grin a little.
