Tithings and Blessings -- Cause Effect Relationship

I can't say that I've ever heard of back-tithing requirements. Any times that I've strayed and come back, I've always been told to just start paying again.

Think of it, how much MORE money do you think they will get if they simply ask to just start paying rather than asking for back tithing? If the members were faced with coming up with past tithing, it would become become an ominous thing and further deter them from paying again.

I know what stewardship is, I didn't understand the bit after that. I will let others answer however. I like that we have a big family meal on new years day it is cool. New years eve usually is boring for us and Im Scottish. :P

I would say you don't calculate tithing on a loan. It is a debt not an increase. If you don't have any incrase, but are just spiraling down into debt, you don't have any tithing to pay. I hope you get a source of income soon. Borrowing money is not the most financial prudent thing to do in the long haul.
I am a student. I get a student loan which mostly goes towards rent. Which is really expensive.

Get a grip Charity, it's all about money. The Mormon Cult was broke in the later part of the 1800's and instituted the full 10% tithing on gross rather than interest. Everything the Cult owns now (including billion dollar shopping malls) was bought with member tithe. The whole Cult is about money. I can't even begin to tell you the number of people who suddenly became "worthy" for the Cult temple by paying "Back Tithing". It all starts with money. Are you depressed? Have you paid your tithing? Are you struggling with the Lord? Have you paid your tithing? Tithing always comes first in Mormonism. Any member who is struggling in any way (job loss, broken down car, depression, etc) will always be counseled to pay tithing in order to receive blessings. All blessings, privileges and callings in the LDS Cult are centered around tithing.

That last sentence is the first correct thing you said in this post so far. But you left out a lot. You can't be a member in good standing unless you are attending your meetings, living the law of chastity, supporting the leaders, obeying the Word of Wisdom, and dealing honestly with your fellow man. Why did you leave all that out?

Mormons who loose their temple recommends are in serious jeopardy of loosing their Celestial blessings. A Mormon who does not pay tithing cannot enter the temple. If a member cannot get into the temple, the member cannot learn the secret handshake, secret password, secret "new name" and special “sealings”. Without these, the member will be unable to pass Joseph Smith and the angels who guard the entrance to the Celestial Kingdom.

Neither can he enter the temple if he is unchaste, dishonest, not attending his meetings, and this breaking the word of wisdom, does that include the odd cup of tea, which by the way my bish knew about. beating his wife and cheating on his business partner. You need to look at the whole picture.

Mormons are commanded that tithing must come first before anything else. Utah has the highest rate of bankruptcies in the United States. Mormons often are told "I cannot pay my bills until I've paid my tithing." Mormons will even pay their tithing rather than give the money to a relative who is on the verge of eviction. Mormon published magazines (Ensign, New Era) constantly stress that tithing must always be paid.

Mormons are not perfect. But they have been taught to stay out of debt. They are taught to help their family members. Could the reason you are so bitter against Mormons be that you had your hand out to someone and they wouldn't fill it with money and you assumed they would have if they hadn't been paying their tithing? Charity should always come first. (not you charity) Jesus did not pay tithes before he was charitable.

Recently, Mormon Senator Orrin Hatch passed legislation that allowed members to pay a full tithe even while they were in bankruptcy court. (See S. 4044).

Mormons are told: "if a destitute family is faced with the decision of paying their tithing or eating, they should pay their tithing." (Lynn Robbins, General Conference, April 2005).

Mormons who have not paid tithing will be denied a temple recommend and will be considered "unworthy". However; Mormons who pay "back-tithing" (some as much as $5000 or more) are instantly found to be worthy and can receive their temple recommends back once the money has been paid. The Mormon Cult uses this as an extortion method when it comes to temple marriages. Parents or family members who have not paid tithing are required to pay back tithing - sometimes in the thousands of dollars - which must be paid before a temple recommend can be issued in order to see their own children married.

This is an out and out false statement. Back tithing is not required. And another word, temple recommends only belong in the hands of faithful members, not in the pockets of the dishonest who have no other intention except to attend a wedding ceremony.

Mormons who claim that tithing is purely "a personal choice" are deceiving themselves and outright lying.

So, who comes with an armed escort and stands over you while you write out a check? That statement was just plain ridiculous. There is no list posted on the bulletin board at Church of who pays and who doesn't. They don't read our name out over the pulpit. You don't get to sit in a special place in the chapel if you pay your tithing.

Are people really asked to pay back tithing??? Jeez.

No, they aren't. For your information, Infymus is so bitter against the Church that he is often. . . . . . inaccurate.

Some people would not afford to pay back tithes anyway. Like someone who had been inactive for about 20 year. Good luck to them.

As a Mormon, I was scared not to pay my tithing! It wasn't a joy for me to give, it was more like paying a bill to a creditor of whom I was afraid. I no longer feel compelled to pay a ten percent tithe, but I do feel that generous giving is a virtue.
Sharing with others is a pleasure to me when I do it out of love, and not fear. And I don't expect blessings in return anymore. Giving is a blessing in itself when I enjoy it so much!

Cngratulations on acheiving a higher level of moral development. At one stage of moral development, the individual does tend to obey rules because they are afraid not to. As they progress, they are more likely to make moral choices based on other reasons. I am glad you no longer are fearful, but it isn't whether or not it is tithing. It is your own moral development.

I once heard a story about a woman who went on a mission but was held as prisoner and she stayed there till she was really old and some church members came across her and she had saved up her tithes and gave them to the church members to hand in as tithe, but I thought that was through her own choice and she wanted to do that. Not because she had to.

You are right. I have heard of many instances where a person, for one reason or another, had no one to give tithing to, and it was just held until the person could give it to someone in authority.

P.s. I have been in the temple countless times without paying tithes and I tell them I don't pay tithes.

Did I call you a liar? All I asked is where you get this information. It's quite possible some members have/had bishops demand this, but it's certainly not Church policy. Unless there's been a radical change in the CHI (Church Handbook of Instructions).

No one is denying it exists. It just isn't church doctrin but rather up to the members discression whether they choose to pay it or not.

That sounds a lot more like the truth. Some members may choose to back pay, just like some members choose to pay more than 10%. Yes, there are some who do pay more than 10%.
