Don't feel too bad. This wasn't nearly as vulgar as it was simply vacuous.

But you should feel bad about being intellectually vacuous as well as boorish.

Gee, who do you suppose Coggins would nominate for this list of Notable LDS Intellectuals? Hmmm.... Something tells me that he is just *burning* to nominate himself.

If it were a list for the least notable LDS intellectuals I would nominate myself. :D

Mister Scratch wrote:Has anyone else read this laff-fest? I can't decide whether the thread is uproariously funny, or if it is a tragic embarrassment. The thread was begun by "Lamanite", who lists these folks in his "1st Presidency" of LDS Intellectuals:

President: Richard Bushman
1st Counselor: Leonard Arrington
2nd Counselor: Eugene England

The thread continues, and what's striking is how many GAs are listed as "intellectuals." Aren't these men supposed to be admired primarily for their spiritual gifts, rather than their (to paraphrase BKP) "so-called" intellectualism? (Further, some of these selections seem like a stretch. I mean, John Taylor? Come on, now.) Joseph Smith and BY each get multiple mentions, as does GBH. The poster called "Thinking" had this provocative observation:

Thinking wrote:Is it possible that the greatest Mormon intellects are not LDS anymore?

Others included BH Roberts, Hugh Nibley, and (ulp...) Lou Midgley. What's noticeable is the remarkable absence of women from the list (Calmoriah included her mother, and Lamanite said, later in the thread, "Ann Madsen.") Check out this classic from Hammer:

I would add the Holy Ghost and Jesus Christ.

The Holy Ghost and Jesus are among the greatest Mormon intellectuals of all time. Yes; I'd be interested in reading Prof. Christ's doctoral dissertation.

Anyways, what a bizarre thread! One wonders just how, exactly, these folks are defining the term "intellectual". It seems that they equate it more with faith and obedience to the Church than anything else. Further, I just found the whole thread to be rather depressing. Aren't there more noteworthy Saints amongst the rank-and-file? Why do the GAs need to be placed on a pedestal for everything?

Must be a slow week. Scratch is locked in the bathroom with the Dialog swimsuit issue again.

But really, such a post coming from Mr. Scratch, a person who is an intellectual only in the sense that he is a clever and articulate manipulator of the signs and symbols of culture, is almost hysterically ironic. He is not a serious thinker, a condition that would be necessary for him to be a credible arbiter of that personal attribute in others.

One does not ahve to be a serious thinker to be an intellectual. Infact one might even suggest that non serious thinkers are more intellectual as they don't need to think seriously and things come naturally. :D

Well, hey---if being an "LDS Intellectual" means getting put up on the mantle beside Hugh Nibley, Lou Midgley, and John Taylor, well, then, I think I'll take a rain check, thank you very much.

What about ex-Mormon female intellectuals? Would Fawn Brodie qualify? Juanita Brooks? Meg Toscano? Sonia Johnson?

All due respect Scratch, they are outside of Mormonism. Once they achieved a level of intellectualism above that of Mormon Penisholders, they lost it (albeit by removal by Mormon Men) into the real world.

Even so, I must agree, these women have archived far beyond the mantel of Mormonism.

Cogs is just mad because no one will play with him over at MADB.

Seems odd you spend so much time here bathing in the attention of ex-mormons...
