Jesus is indeed the ultimate conservative. But Southern Baptists? Puh-leeeze!

Well, Southern Baptists agree with the LDS members stance on homosexuality, war, women's rights, abortion, stem cell research and the death penalty.

All well and good.

However, SB also are inordinately involved in getting science out of the class-room and, like liberals, oppose freedom of speech and belief for those who don't agree with them.

From viewing the board it also doesn't look as though environmental concerns are looked upon too kindly by many LDS.

Environmental concerns as defined by whom?

There are (very mainstream) Christian denominations that are not anti-abortion and are not anti-stem cell research, protest the Iraq War, beat up on Bush for the Kyoto Treaty,

Mainstream as in mainstream media.

are very progressive -- those would be waaay too liberal for LDS.

And there are LDS that seem to support the notion that California should be dumped into the ocean because the Justices in that state ruled on homosexual marriages not to their liking. Hmm...

Mainstream as in large protestant denominations such as the Methodists and Presbyterians.

by the way, my parents are faithful, active LDS - and are democrats. They looooove sassing all the republicans in their ward.

If I recall correctly, BH Roberts was an avid democrat, as have been some other high profile LDS. So while there is a clear cultural pressure towards conservative republicanism, it is possible to kick against that particular prick. (and the big one in the White House makes the kicking pretty easy right now)

I've wondered how Democrats were treated in the Church and if there is lots of political talk. I did a thread one time inquiring about this and never really got much in the way of answers. Of course the Republicans count on the LDS as a block vote. Does politics come up often outside of the boards?

Part of it depends on the ward. There was a lot of political talk in my old ward, particularly anti-abortion activism. In fact, I think they did things that they weren't supposed to do, like set up a table right outside the relief society room and try to get members to sign up with some anti-abortion group. But the president of the anti-abortion group was the daughter-in-law of one of our "notable" members, so that may explain it.

My parents and their LDS friends talk (or fight) about politics a lot. But that may be part of the age group.

When I was a young married with young kids in the LDS church, I never talked about politics with anyone. I didn't have the time or energy.

While many LDS may look askance at democrats, if the LDS democrats are faithful, active members, I doubt they'd be mistreated or discriminated against.
