Well, one advantage to A.I. in the USA is that you can shop for just the kind of genetic donation you wish. I know someone who is now in college and has said that once she gets her medical degree she is going to get sperm donation so she can have a child that have excellent health, intelligence and is not predisposed to obesity.

I do think A.I. has great benefits for society. I think though that the church is wrong to threaten church discipline on single women who opt for A.I., especially if they are doing it due to having little prospects of marriage before they are to old to have a child. I can understand the church wants to discourage it, but that is where they should limit their involvement.

Well, they shouldn't be involved if a man gets snipped, either.

Here is an excellent article on how few women can actually expect to get pregant naturally after 40:

My understanding is that most countries with state-funded medical care will not waste time on trying to assist a woman to get pregnant after they reach 40. Of course, they can undergo fertility treatment but that is probably going to be at the expense of the woman/couple and is not all that likely to be successful.

"Artificial insemination of single sisters is not approved. Single sisters who deliberately refuse to follow the counsel of Church leaders in this matter are subject to Church discipline"

Handbook 1, SP & Bishops, 2010 17.3.3

And what would that be? I don't see too many women getting excommunicated for getting pregnant out of wedlock nowadays.

Also, is having a child worth such a risk? Maybe ask Eve?

Fanninan, All I did was quote the handbook. I am not responsible for what the bishops, stake jokers and the other lying bastards do or how they excuse it.

Nope. A single woman that gets pregnant via A.I. is subject to church discipline.

If she's endowed and active, she can and likely would be (depending on the circumstances and how defiant she is) excommunicated. Unendowed active women would likely be disfellowshipped.

Inactive women would likely be ignored.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

What if your bishop was also your fertility doctor?

Again, has anyone actually heard of a woman getting A.I. and getting in trouble? There is no punishment for egg or sperm donors or couples who get A.I. when the husband is sterile or carries a dangerous abnormality in his genes.

I suppose if a single woman wants to be all legal and safe she could get a celibate gay Mormon guy to marry her and she could get A.I. all she wanted -- and the children would be sealed to both the husband and the wife if they are sealed.
