You are a girl though so you probably didn't hear about it as often.
Plus when you are taught it is evil but it seemed like something that was so natural to do it was hard not to think of it. When you go six months without doing it that can drive a guy insane and frustrated. So yes it needs to be talked about because this issue made me think I was a big fat sinner for 16 years of my life. That's got to do some damage to a person and it's hard to get over.
I mentioned the M-word in my book as part of the chapter on missionary preparation and the pre-mission interview. A female relative asked me, "Why would you put that in? What's the point?" I said that, for me, it was a big part of feeling I was worthy to serve a mission (I could honestly say when I had my interview that it wasn't a problem in my life at all).
She couldn't understand what I meant, so I told her that, from the time I was 12, this was a huge deal, something pounded into us routinely in priesthood lessons, at Scout activities, and in interviews.
"Well, so what?" she asked. "You got the same kind of teaching about the Word of Wisdom and the other commandments."
No, we didn't. That was my point.
