Polychlorinated biphenyls... PCB's. Used in older transformers. Really bad stuff. Skin reactions, liver damage and birth defects.

I think they stopped putting PCBs in transformers in the late 70's or early 80's. If they have all been replaced, then no worries.

My guess is that there are many of the old ones still out there. I think they will be replacing them only when they fail.

I guess the point is, why take a chance?
