Being an Apologists mean never having to say you are sorry.
Scholarship, Church Doctrine, historical literature and sound logic in constructing faithful well-reasoned answers.
What we do is provide information to people who encounter criticism of the Church. Many are looking for the truth about the issues. Overtime and with a change of leadership, we decided that debate was not the proper role of FAIR. We decided that FAIR was there to provide information not to debate. Eventually our message board became a problem for us. FAIR is a internet based group of volunteers, there are currently about 100 people on our volunteer. Differing and divergent view points to collaborate on answers
Wide variety of opinions lead to responses that are reflective of that variety
Many if not most anti-mormon documents are rebuted simply by going back to the source documents and by understanding the culture of the day.
Many anti-mormon arguments can be framed “Joseph Smith was a false prophet because” just fill in the blank.
Sunshine leads to variety of outcomes, often shows the quote is out of context, occasionally shows the quote is quite correct.
Then you have to move on the next question “Does it matter”. Does it make the Church less true when you have two Apostles arguing opposing sides to the evolution issue.
Another common tactic [of anti-mormons] is that the Church is hiding the information 2 common examples
Joseph Smith plural marriage
Joseph Smith may have used a hat and a seer stone to translate the Book of Mormon. The typical claim is that the Church has been hiding this or has been dishonest about it
Joseph Smith marriages 2007 “teachings of Presidents, Joseph Smith vii-xiii Ensign, Aug 92 30, jan 89 30, Dec 78 42, feb 77 48, New Era dec 73 7, DC section 132 1843 that talks about plural marriage.
As far as translation with a stone in a hat, citations, that talks about that. Ensign Jan 97, pg 36
Ensign, Jul 93, pg 61
Ensign, Jan 88, pg 6-13
Ensign, Sep 77. pg 79
Friend, Sep 1974, 7
So you’ll also note the childrens magazine entry. That fact that you may not have heard about something in a Sunday school lesson does not mean it is hidden (The Church does not teach history, it uses examples from history to teach gospel principles)
Scholar discussion in a faithful LDS context
We, as a people (LDS) need to stop both the race baiting and glossing over of facts in our discussion in this area.
M. Perkin, our church has done an execellent job documenting all of its racism and racist remarks
FAIR sponsors Mormon Scholars testify, we keep it going for him [DCP].
