Mormonism in Transition (the 3rd edition is out now) by Thomas Alexander.
Solemn Covenant by Carmon Hardy is a must-read if you're interested in polygamy.
Determining Doctrine by Dennis Horne is very interesting and informative.

Re: Book Recommendations
"Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris. Short and to the point.
IMHO, this common sense book should be required reading for graduation from high school.
Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins
The Elegant Universe, by Brian Greene (a bit dated now, but very good)

I've had an interest in The Gift and Power: Translating the Book of Mormon since Gardner participated in a thread a while back.
Thanks for the recommendations.

If I understand correctly "Letter to a Christian nation" is reply to all the feedback he got from "The End of Faith." Is the End of Faith also worth reading?

Maybe this is too harsh of a judgement, but it strikes me as odd that apostles and prophets write and sell books. It's almost like they are leveraging their position within Mormonism to make a little extra money on the side. I guess I would classify it as a sort of 'conflict of interest.'

Here's food for thought. Whatever old and bscure book it was that Monson pointed out in his Christmas devo talk last December, DesBook had it advertised and ready to put on th shelves before he ever gave the talk.
Also, a couple months ago, the LDS Church News had a full page article about their (illegal) iPad/iPhone book reader, ending with the claim that using the app would fulfill Pres Eyring's call to study more about the gospel.
You're absolutely vile and obnoxious paternalistic air of intellectual superiority towards anyone who takes issue with your clear misapprehension of core LDS doctrine must give one pause. - Droopy

Don't leave home without it.
Droopy,
I enjoyed Radical Son but have mixed feelings about Mr Horowitz. I keep hearing a propagandist trained by experts, the party. I can respect his escape from the party, but I wonder if he really put away the tools. He seems to maintain a bit of the, smarter than everybody else conviction, which has been maintenance fuel so long for the party.
How would you compare this new Leviathan to the old American Colossus?
