I read the book in high school and watched the original release of the movie back in 2002.

The book was way too "molly Mormon"-ish for me, although I finished it.

The movie wasn't a musical, Darth J. However, the male lead was so wooden and automaton-ish that he dragged the film down significantly.

Also, speaking of the Book of Mormon movie, although I never saw it myself I went to high school with the guy who played Lemuel. I knew him well.

I read Flowers for Algernon back when I was a teen. Is Will Schryver playing the lead role in this remake?

I read that book as a young tween/teenager. I'm pretty sure there was sobbing involved. I also read Weyland's "Michelle and Debra," and then resolved to be as righteous and pure as possible for the sake of my future eternal companion (lucky him). Both of those books seemed so inspiring at the time. I wonder how they compare to today's Twilight drivel. I can't remember too much about them, except somebody died in one, after having a baby and there was breastfeeding, and somebody had a good time, but repented, in the other buoyed up by a friendship forged during YW days. I did also give the first Twilight a read so that I'd be able to mock it with greater authority.

My friends were really big into the "Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites" books, but by the time I heard about those, even my little True Blue Mega Mormon soul knew that there were better ways to pass time. I did, however, read the first two "Work and the Glory" books, but after people started referencing them in Sunday School, I just couldn't go on with them. Even then, I felt like they were doing more harm than good. You can imagine how appalled I was by the historical fiction that is "Legacy". Thankfully, I was apostate and raring to appreciate "The Testaments," which my in-laws subjected me to.

I am enormously grateful for my subsequent education and introduction to literature more worth reading, and film more worthy of enjoyment. LDS-themed fiction hasn't fared so well, critically or otherwise.

And, oh-my-word, did I just read on wikipedia that Jack Weyland is a Physics professor? I did not see that coming.

Historical fiction, you say? Are you implying that cows don't understand English?

I now know what it feels like to spontaneously snort orange soda through one's nose. Thanks for that.

Ah, Legacy . . . I clearly remember being very moved by it the first time I saw it (when I was in high school). I saw it again recently at a family gathering, but this time it just made me feel like vomiting. I simply could not believe how inaccurate it was.

Also, I'm ashamed to admit this, but I first learned about the limited geography theory from reading Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites. At the time, I thought that the author was spouting some crazy apostate theory.

I would like to thank everyone who has brought up Legacy, as it gives me an excuse to bring up an earlier discussion about the actress who portrayed its main character.

Many of us may remember the Church-produced movie Legacy that was shown at Temple Square years ago. Legacy was about a woman who came to Utah with the pioneers remembering her experiences and how her trials strengthened her faith, and also how she said a prayer that made her dead ox come back to life.

Image

The woman who is the main character is Eliza Williams, and was played by an actress named Kathleen Beller. Prior to her appearance in Legacy, Ms. Beller had a major role in a 1982 sword and sorcery movie, which was aptly titled, The Sword and the Sorcerer. It was very much rated R.

Image

In The Sword and the Sorcerer, Ms. Beller plays Alana, whose brother has been captured by the evil usurper to the throne. She tells the hero, Talon, that if he rescues her brother she will give him one night of pleasure.

But Alana herself is captured, and the evil ruler decides to make Alana marry him. And then we are treated to a scene of Ms. Beller being totally nude and getting an oil rub-down to prepare for her forced wedding.

I would like to offer my compliments to the Church in the actress it chose to represent our pioneer heritage at Temple Square.

The Sword and the Source-er-er terrified me as a young man of 12 years old. You know why? Satan.

That's right.

The movie wasn't uplifting, and if I recall correctly there was a Pan-like character who wanted to have sex with a Blonde woman. Also, I believe there was some transgender crap happening.

I don't know. It was very confusing for a boy of 12 years old who was told, via Stake conference that Dungeons and Dragons was of Satan.

Also, a sword with three blades that could fire... Totally implausible.

Ah ha, Dr. Cam! I have another connection for you between The Sword and the Sorceror and the Church!

The scary guy in TS&TS---the eponymous "Sorceror"----was Xusia:

Xusia was played by Richard Moll.

And Richard Moll also played Joseph Smith in this movie:
