Is Mormonism Closer to Islam than to Orthodox Christianity?

Very interesting list. I would like to see what an "expert" like DCP would have to say about this.

Good question. Anyone who knows DCP's online personality could provide a good guess.

1. DCP would probably point out all the differences he could find between Mormonism and Islam and then claim that, in the light of these differences, the similarities are unimportant or uninteresting.

2. If DCP were true to form, he would then point out that, since I do not have a Ph.D. in Arabic or Islamic Studies, I am certainly not qualified to generate such a list.

3. DCP might even claim that, since the post was made on this board by an apostate, it was clearly motivated by bigotry and hate.

Sound about right?

Or, a reasoned response to how one should look for commonalities between diverse religious beliefs, such as you have done. Isn't that the latest Mormon PR?

by the way, there are commonalities between orthodox Christianity and Islam. :)

Okay. I changed the title of this thread back to the title of the original post, putting it in the form of a question - to which many (if not most), would probably answer "No", I suppose.

Still, I think the list is well worth considering for Mormons, especially in the light of Joseph Smith's claim to be the "second Muhammad".

I will also grant you that Mormon leadership seems to be trying to "mainstream" Mormonism. As this process continues (if it continues), then Mormonism will look lot more like orthodox Christianity, and less like Islam, as time goes on.

One problem Mormon Leadership will have with mainstreaming after a certain point (fast approaching) is that the Corporation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will eventually have to change it's business model.

When most members are finally allowed to recognize openly (without fear of sanction) that Joseph Smith more of a con man than a prophet, when the Book of Abraham is no longer supported as a translation of Egyptian papyri, when the claims of the Book of Mormon's historicity are no longer vigorously defended, when all the tall tales and lies that are at the foundation of Mormonism are slowly converted to "tradition", fewer and fewer members are going to feel the need to pay a full tithe (or tithe at all), resulting in a reduction in per member tithing receipts. When Church growth falters and ceases, the corporate side will need to change how it does business. Members as janitors can only go so far.
