When I was in Afghanistan R. Lee Ermey came on one of the USO tours or something like that. He did a lot of grip and grinning with the Soldiers and Marines. He would do his DI thing and drop people for push ups. They all ate it up. He seemed like a pretty good guy all around.

DrW, you have a perfect right to call anything BS that you want to call BS. I say that it happened precisely as Echo Hawk said it happened. How do we determine who is right and who is wrong? Are we at an impasse?

First, to all of you that have mentioned that you have served, I extend you my sincere and most appreciative thanks for your service.

As for the movie "Full Metal Jacket", in my opinion, that is one great movie! (Absolute classic)

I did get in a little hot water with the wife over this movie though.
Short version: The bride is out for the night so my boy (11) and I watched it together on cable (Maybe not the best parenting decision I have made). Anyway, the part of the movie when they do the "this is for fighting............this is for fun" march..............................well, he decided to gear up with his Air-Soft gun and repeat this march, with all hand gestures, for his mother the next morning.

I had some explaining to do!

Peace,

Great story. Thanks for sharing that.

Can just imagine.

"Sir,
This is my rifle,
This is my gun
This is for fighting
This is for fun,
Sir."

(The actual word in the rhyme in the 1960's was "killing", not fighting).

Brings back memories, though.

What we do in the absence of video evidence is to weigh the probabilities based on knowledge and experience as to how the "system" works.

Given that basic training in the USMC follows a well known and well proven set of procedures, which do not allow for deference to a book of imagined scripture, and given the track record of Church leaders in terms lying for the Lord (or at least embellishing the truth to come up with faith promoting stories), it should be pretty clear that the weight of evidence points to the story being BS.

Think of it this way: for those who have been in the Corps., the story would be BS. For those who have the capability to assess and weigh evidence, the story would be BS.

But for those for whom the story was intended; those who blindly and unquestioningly follow these self-righteous leaders who have no problem continuing to promote the massive fraud which is Mormonism, the story may seem perfectly reasonable, and even faith promoting.

The latter group (less than 2% of the US population) should keep in mind that most of the other 98% would recognize this story as BS, and account that BS to the reputation of the speaker and the LDS Church.

Hey DrW,

Interesting!

So they changed the words for the movie? (Given the collective content of the movie, I can't imagine why they had a desire to 'soften' this one thing up)

Anyway, thanks for the interesting bit of historical information.

Doesn't really work in Mormonism though...

"Bishop!
These are my scriptures
These are my truth
These are for killi...ehm...converting non believers
This is for leaving alone until I'm properly married and sealed in the temple...to a woman
Bishop!"

Not quite as catchy...

Ceeboo,

I have no doubt that Marines somewhere, sometime, used the words "fighting" instead of "killing" - just not us, and not at that time.

There are two widely separated basic training centers (Depots) in the Corps: MCRD PI (Paris Island SC) and MCRD SD (San Diego).

As you might imagine, the cultures at these two Depots can be quite different. Paris Island is generally considered tougher because of the location (near a swamp) and climate (especially in the summer).

MCRD is essentially on the beach in San Diego - an otherwise beautiful place. (I was sent to MCRD SD)

There were a number of other running hymns, as well. Some of them were quite colorful. Funny what can bring some comfort and help release the tension of 18 or 19 year olds who know that they are soon going to be facing the test of their lives with their life literally at stake. (For example, note the gallows humor in the Body Bag lyrics above).

To sort of appreciate the Zeitgeist, one must remember that most of these guys were not volunteers (as I was). They had been drafted, and many of them were none too happy about it.

Yes, a very important and worthy point to consider/remember.

Thanks for adding this perspective.
