Five weeks ago today, I underwent rectum resection surgery as a second phase for my treatment of rectum cancer (the first phase being radiation and pill chemo). Next Tuesday I start phase three which is five months of intravenous chemo treatments. For some reason I require a full experience and hemorrhaged last Monday night , ending up with an emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and another 2 day stay in the hospital. Just got home this evening.

I sat and cried like a baby in the ER Monday night, overwhelmed by experience thus far.

What quieted my tears was reflecting on a care package I received from several members of this board just last week.

God bless you guys for that gift of love and concern … it was much needed and came at exactly the right moment.

You know who you are and I truly thank you for your gift.

Hang in there my friend. I have been through exactly what you are going through. I know in detail what you are going through. It is not fun at all. I pray you get through it.

Upon walking into the ER and telling them I was bleeding, an instant rush of activity occurred. Two people, one on each arm simultaneously putting in I'V's, a third nurse simultaneously asking me the standard barrage of questions, my wife out in the hall with the registrar also answering a barrage of questions.

Things settled for a moment as everyone finished their intense goals and left, all but the nurse who was now trying to get me to lay down. It was at this point that the emotions hit me and I began to cry. The nurse grabbed me and hugged me deeply for a prolonged moment before getting back to business. Neither of us spoke, as nothing more needed said.

Later, this lady, my ER charge nurse was handing the reigns over to the guy who was to roll me off to surgery, I overheard her in conversation with the hand-off … "This is my patient, you take the best of care with him".

God it is good to see and feel the best of human nature that comes out in us all under the right conditions.

It is good to have friends along the journey.

Thank you one and all.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. I had no idea--I'm pretty clueless that way.
