Perhaps the Mall has soaked up more money than was expected. I suspect it will be a money challenge that has caused the U turn.

I would be surprised if money were the issue. If the Church wants something done it gets done. A building like this would run from 50 to 200 million, depending on the square feet. Not much for a Church that just dropped 5 billion into a mall and is currently building 15-20 temples. Just put a few of the announced temples on hold for a couple of years and you have the funds freed up.

I'm a little surprised the typically-business savvy Church didn't announce the new MTC building proposal AFTER the missionary age-lowering announcement. They would have had a much better chance of getting the LDS members of the neighborhood to go along with that eye sore of a building while they were still excited about God's new policy change.

I think that's a fair point.
Have you seen the thread I started about MTC numbers?
I quote an interesting claim about how many missionaries are supposed to go through the Provo MTC. Maybe there is a lack of numbers hence the reversal.

I doubt the number of men will increase much, but the number of women might now that they can go at 19. Now didn't they also say the stay in the MTC will also be shortened. I thought I heard it somewhere but haven't paid that much attention to it.

Yes they did announce that.
So, Wards will be receiving younger less trained missionaries.

Less time means less missionaries in the MTC, so maybe they now don't need a 9 story building.

It would be interesting to know what those 'other reasons' were, lack of funds perhaps...lack of missionaries...maybe...

One might also enquire why God didn't see this coming and pull the project before inception...

You guys are seeing this all wrong. I have it from an anonymous "informant" that this was a straightforward application of D&C 9:9. What, you believe the Lord will give it to them when they take no trouble save to ask? No! They had to produce the idea, hire the architects, plan the structure, craft the arguments to make to the neighbors, and all the rest, and then ask of God, who giveth unto all men liberally, and upbraideth not.

In this case, so my "informant" whispers to me, after the completed plan was presented to the Lord, he sent a stupor of thought. After a few minutes' nervousness, sheepish church authorities admitted to each other that apparently this wasn't the Lord's will after all, and they have returned to the drawing board.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Yes! That's what I'm talkin' about. It's all more proof that the Lord speaks to his prophets and leads the church.

Has anyone noticed how conspicuously absent our TBM posters are?
