Whoops!

Interesting that the book you feel is the closest to my requirements in a continually changing work compiled by a committee.

That process is itself representative of the modern LDS Church.

It seems more the approach you take than the material is what leads you to God.

You did mention that the book asks the reader to talk to God.

I'll take that as an answer. It isn't very unique but it works.

I think I have him pretty sold on an early 19th century version of Mormonism.

The problem, I fear, lies in the path not taken.

Why is this good, it seems to me it's only good if it's a version of Mormonism he can find now. Can he find it now?

As an attorney, he would likely have some excellent insight in that regard. I wouldn't do it with any intention to put the book in a bad light but rather to ask him whether he thinks Nephi was justified in doing the deed.

I would have him read the Bible and ask him can god be accountable for murder when the red sea closes in on the soldiers. Or when god killed the couple for not paying tithing. Or....

So you don't want him to believe in the Bible, either?

I could have mentioned how the ancients believed that their gods and goddesses would unleash punishment on the pagans if the pagans would be acting out of step.

God is god and gods and goddesses are gods and goddesses. And they act accordingly.

He sure was. No one should have messed with his chosen people except god himself.
