I wonder if Jeff took the time to talk to the missionaries to better understand the challenges they face in trying to sign people up to an organisation that has well documented problems with homophobia, misogyny, historical transparency, financial transparency, institutional child abuse and a leadership that struggles to tell the truth.

The LDS Church expects to have more missionaries than ever in its global proselytizing force by 2019, according to a top Mormon leader.
"We're projecting out probably within four years," apostle Jeffrey R. Holland told a radio interviewer, "the base-line number for the missionary force will be something around 100,000."

“My Brethren,” said Elder Holland, “have made the case for the metaphor of musket fire which I have endorsed yet again today.
On Aug. 23, Jeffrey R. Holland, Brigham Young University’s former president and a senior apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, gave an inflammatory speech to BYU faculty and staff. In it, he urged faculty to take up metaphorical muskets to defend the faith. He called on them to be both builders of knowledge and defenders of the institution—the church—that determines whether the university exists and the faculty get funding to do their jobs, a fact he reminded them of multiple times in the speech. His words were unmistakably a call to arms: Holland used the word “fire” 10 times, “musket” eight times, and made multiple references to “friendly fire,” “wounds,” and “scarring.” In particular, he called for “more musket fire” from BYU’s faculty to defend Mormonism’s official position on the inferiority and social dangers of same-sex relationships and marriages.

On the same day that Brigham Young University announced the creation of an “Office of Belonging” to combat “prejudice of any kind, including that based on race...and sexual orientation,” Latter-day Saint apostle Jeffrey R. Holland sharply criticized faculty members and students who challenge the faith’s teachings on same-sex marriage.

He also questioned why a BYU valedictorian would choose his 2019 commencement address to come out as gay.

The Hell's Angel story that turned out to be untrue...

The attempted lie about blood oaths during a TV interview...

The "wrong road" talk...

"I'm not a dodo..."

Someone is definitely failing, but it's not the missionaries.

And this is actually pretty darn important because it appears to me the idea is to present an image, regardless of truth in the story. I simply can't believe they think that is a valid way to go about it. How about just keeping it real? Why is that not good enough?

I'm not sure this is actually a recent quote.

I'm fairly certain this was from an incident in the early 1990s, where a number of missionaries were sent home at the same time. It may have been before he was an apostle in fact, he was serving on the area presidency in the UK.

He definately said those words however, and it was definately the Bristol mission.

I will see if I can find some hard evidence to support my claim and return and report.

Yeah, since that time, he has just been being inspired to go down wrong roads, so it's all good... :D

After years of gathering data and analyzing it, I feel safe in concluding that the LDS Church’s methodology is, to a large extent, assholery. It’s not that these LDS leaders are necessarily assholes by nature, but it is pretty clear that becoming an LDS leader often turns a person into an insufferable, self-righteous asshole when he acts in the role of an LDS leader. Elder Bednar may come by it more naturally. I think Holland honestly had to work at it, but boy did he perfect his assholery in his leadership role.
The same thing has been known to happen to lawyers who become judges for the record.
And lawyers who become podcasters.

And lawyers who become podcasters.
And lickspittles who advocate for Rosebud.
