MAYBE the church shouldn't build on this land... but how about engaging them like you would ANY OTHER DEVELOPER, instead of insinuating that because it's the Mormons, there's some kind of sinister aspect to their plans.

Interesting question, in my opinion. On the one hand, yes, why not? It is a complicated question. There are many ways to approach it. I would counter with another question: why not treat the LDS Church like any other church in this situation? Immediately we start to see the issue. The question has to do with what the voting public thinks is appropriate for religious groups in terms of their privileges and rights, which derive from government by the people and voters’ goodwill toward charitable organizations.

Is it radical to think that an organization that does not behave like a church should perhaps not receive the advantages of a church? Of course, the legal and constitutional protections of churches are pretty ironclad, allowing for a generous amount of abuse. But why should people just keep quiet about such abuses because the current law allows abusers a free pass?

Apologists for these organization treat these legal allowances like holy writ. “How dare anyone question the goodness of my organization and its absolute right to operate as it does!” But the truth is that government by the people and for the people means, also, that people get to revisit the terms of the deal.

No one should buy into the argument that a church can do whatever it wants with its money without question simply because its adherents assert such. Laws and amendments create the possibility for change, and every citizen has the right and duty to question these organizational free riders who aggressively stockpile wealth while not paying taxes.
