I noticed that neither of the two reporting websites have updated their data on “Witnesses.” It seems unlikely that this is a glitch on their end. So, is the distributor tardy in reporting the data? Or has “Witnesses”’ theatrical run come to an end? Is this where we officially declare it a “box office flop”?

Not so fast...
I’m pleased to report, by the way, that Witnesses was the top grossing film at AMC Theatres Boston Commons 19 last night.

(By "last night" he's referring to June 25th)
Of course, that might reflect a benefactor or two buying up entire screenings, or it might not...

This 2 star review was a bit unusual:
Jun 21, 2021

I do applaud the film for portraying the use of the rock in the hat in the dictation of The Book of Mormon, the Kirtland bank failure and Joseph Smith's relationship with Fanny Alger. But I also applaud academics and the ex-Mormon community in their effort to make such truths known, to the point that they are manifest even in faithful Latter-day Saint cinema.
How were "ex-Mormon community" efforts manifested in the film?

Were they able to get all Mormons in the tri-state area into that theater?

I read it as saying that the face-in-hat translation, Fanny Alger etc. weren't well known until the academic and exMo communities really brought them to the forefront, and that they wouldn't have been shown in the movie if they weren't part of the conversation.

The big attendance decline is puzzling. It’s almost like people don’t care that this movie won a Bronze Telly award.
