Ira Fulton, the guy mentioned in that article, is the man who called Mike Quinn a "nothing person" and who was bailed out by the LDS Church by a major land purchase in the middle of the financial meltdown.

Yet another good reason to pay tithing to charities that responsibly report to you what they do with the money.

Yeah, but we don't know the details, right? I mean, it is one thing for me to state the facts, but we don't know what calculus was being used to make this decision.

Having grown up in that environment, it is not hard to imagine what likely influenced the decision. A lot of business is carried out in Priesthood Quorums and in the Church buildings themselves. Nepotism seems to be the "golden" rule in Mormondom.

Well, that is tied up in the Kingdom theology isn't it?

Yes, and there is little wonder Mormons now have Prophets that don't prophecy, Seers that don't see, and Revelators that don't reveal. Nothing is more damning than the answer often posed to questions about the Church that they don't know the answer. Oh really?!? Here they are prophets of God and they can't be bothered to ask the Lord and find out the answer. They instead just sit around dumbstruck and spout made up stories in General Conference to promote faith and avoid serious questions and issues like the plague.

And here you are, someone who claims to have seen God Himself, and you can't answer the questions any better than they can. Pot, meet kettle.

Making an unfounded generalization is just a cheap shot. When you want to get into specifics, let me know. Bring it on anytime if you dare. I certainly won't shy away from difficult questions about the Church.

That's interesting re: Ira Fulton's involvement with the PLC. It reminded me of an old exchange I had with Dr. Peterson pertaining to Fulton's dismissal of Mike Quinn as a "nothing person":

Daniel Peterson wrote:
Doctor Scratch wrote:I mean, there are really only a couple of ways of interpreting what he said: (a) he's a homophobic bigot and hates Quinn for being gay; (b) he hates Quinn because Quinn was ex'ed; (c) part of his attitude has been influenced by apologists' painting of him as an "untrustworthy" historian. So take your pick.

I would say that (b), particularly when restated without your characteristic exaggeration and spin, probably comes closest to the truth. It's scarcely surprising that a Latter-day Saint would perhaps be less than ecstatic at the idea of his university hiring an excommunicated (and notably revisionist) Mormon to teach and research on Mormonism.

As I say, I can think of nothing to suggest that Ira Fulton was aware of, let alone that he had read, anything in the FARMS Review at all.

I guess we can now say that there are at least a few reasons to suggest that Fulton was aware of the Review.

Actually, there were 19 recipients, not 18--M. Gerald Bradford was the 19th recipient.

I have never met Doctor Scratch in real life, and I have no idea what his real name is, so I'm allowed to speculate on this point. To whit:

  • Maybe Doctor Scratch's "informant" is un-sniffable because the informant is none other than M. Gerald Bradford himself.
  • Maybe M. Gerald Bradford **IS** Doctor Scratch!

Laugh if you want, but you have to admit that it certainly explains how and why the Institute "leaks like a sieve."
