It was pretty cool, in that she had to spend a lot of time reading up on the light spectrum, heat energy, and chlorophyll in order to develop the experiment. But even more cool, she had results that did not support the hypothesis which was not what she wanted so we got to talk a little about the "why" of the entire enterprise. Winning helped underscore that point. The science teacher had outside professionals do the scoring along with his for the grade, so it was nice to have her get congratulations from "real scientists" for the question, experiment, and methods.
Neat! She obviously learned a great lesson of how science works in the course of her experiments. In effect, then, her project did not confirm her initial hypothesis, which is okay, of course. That, if anything, only makes what she learned even more valuable. I think scientists often learn more from a "failed" experiment than from a successful one. After all, if an experiment only confirms what we already suspected or thought we knew, what have we really learned? My favorite example of this is the Michelson-Morley experiment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelson%E2%80%93Morley_experiment designed to detect our motion with respect to the "luminiferous aether." What an astounding effect that eventually had on our understanding of space and time!

In case some of the people that are following this thread would like to merely consider an alternate view concerning the proposed evolution of sexual reproduction - I offer you this 9 minute Youtube video. (below)
If you are not interested in this consideration, please feel free to simply pass on watching it.
Either way (whether you are convinced that DET answers the question/questions that surround the evolution of sexual reproduction/Mitosis - or you, like me - find it severely lacking in answering those fundamental questions) I still enjoy the fascinating discussions.

I watched it. In a nutshell: "I don't understand evolution, and after watching this video I hope you won't either." At least he outright admits that the basis for his argument is a logical fallacy (incredulity), but after that he's a bit hit-and-miss on that whole honesty thing. Strawmen? Yeah, we got strawmen.
