I do have a plaid, kilt-style pleated school girl skirt, but I don't think that's what you're talking about.
Actually, I have nothing against plaid or tartan per se. It all depends on how it is used: colour, fabric, design and cut. In the plaid shirt photo you posted, the overall cotton-poly Eddie Bauer-esque vibe might also be what you are reacting to.
