This is a great example of a little information being a dangerous thing. Also the disconnect between book learning and real world experience.

I really suggest your daughter learn how to set up an apache web server. She should be able to set up a free 1 year student account with Microsoft Azure, quickly create a virtual linux server, and install apache on it. Put a simple HTML "Hello world" file on it, and access that simple web page from various locations. She will be able to see the IP address of the incoming requests in the apache file as per my link above.

Apache is the world standard web server, 25% of all websites are hosted using Apache.
Great advice. Hopefully Shades is still reading this thread. The last thing we need is a moderator with access to IP addresses who insists there is no such thing as an IP log. Maybe he really doesn't know, or maybe he is being facetious, but either way it doesn't inspire confidence.

I'm glad we're able to help your daughter learn more about IT, she's been criminally underserved in her education if she is this mistaken.

Y'all need to get over the IP thing. IP addresses are as useful for discovering personal information as your Mormon Discussions handle.

You just don't get it. It's not so much the IP's but your flippant attitude and immaturity. The board needs moderators who present an air of responsibility and make members feel secure. You don't possess those qualities. You instill a sense of worry and bad feelings and you're not a good candidate. So how about you withdraw from the race?

Shades is not going to pick you.

Sledge is just another Men/Tall/Jim/Nest without the slashes and the 2.0.

I don't trust someone that wants "it" soooooo bad. I think he wants to be a NewNameNoah for his side. I'll just leave it at I don't trust him.

 Yes it seems so, but your slashes tell their own great story.

Lem, you're clearly not equipped to have this conversation. From my daughter:

"Cisco IOS is an operating system that resides at layer 7 on the OSI model. IP addresses are at layer 3. What this is describing are not "IP logs" but IP Access List logs."
Lol. So you didn't actually mean it when you said "There is no such thing as an 'IP log'." is that what you are saying?
Understanding IP Logging

You can manually configure the sensor to capture all IP traffic associated with a host you specify by IP address. You can specify how long you want the IP traffic to be logged, how many packets you want logged, and how many bytes you want logged.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/s ... #wp1030704
You're the one making false claims in your efforts to be granted access to the moderator level of this forum.
Lem, you may be missing another possibility.

Sledge may truly not understand that:
  • an IP address, while normally unable to uniquely identify an individual by itself, may be used as a further datapoint, along with other pieces of data, to identify someone, or to confirm an identity
  • IP logging results in the creation of what may be called an IP log. If the 'formal' name for the product is IP access list log, then there may (formally) be no such thing as an IP log
Might this idea make you feel more comfortable with having Sledge as a mod?

I believe in some technical manuals it is referred to as a "tapir log", but those are probably based off obscure reformed-Egyptian documents.

Maybe Sledge is missing 116 pages of that manual?
