This is a very interesting question. For years, the Church taught that "the great whore" was the Catholic Church, and the "the true Church of the Lamb" was the LDS Church. I remember this being taught in Sunday School and in seminary.
Now, the Church has backed off that stance, since it seems to be streamlining in with "mainstream" Christian churches.
I think the only place that was said to be so from an Apostle was in first edition of McKonkie's Mormon Doctrine. I think he was wrong though. The Catholic Church does not fit the definition. The Whore also seems to have much more power than the Catholic Church even at it's height.

Could the secret government 'fit the definition'.
What secret government?

The whole "great whore of the Earth" thing is so nebulous you can twist it to mean whatever you want, to fit whatever agenda you want, etc. Perhaps we really will blow ourselves up some day because someone finds an interpretation of this mythology which pits one group of humans against another group for a fight to the finish. It will be self-fulfilling prophecy, I suppose.
When I was a teenager back in the 1980s I thought that the Soviet Union had something to do with it. Worldwide communism could have been the "great whore". Armageddon, in my mind, had something to do with a military clash between the US and the USSR centered around the Middle East. And you know what? It could have happened, too.
But it wasn't to be the Soviets after all. And it apparently wasn't the Catholic Church. Now it's the Muslims? And what will it be next? Or will we have blown ourselves up before we have a chance to find some other group to demonize by the misapplication of 2000 year old mythology?
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Humans have been against one another from the begining of time, so it's not really self fulfilling because someone said so.

It could apply to all that causes angst. Not necesarly litteral but an emotion, a way of being or even matter in general. (maybe that's a little too budhisty)

The church of the lamb and that great whore that the Bible talks about. I thought maybe Christians would fight non christians. And as Muslims are a large organisation, I thought maybe they would be involved in this somewhere. But if Mormons and Muslims come together, then what does that mean? Who is that great whore? and is there a true church of the lamb? or has that all gone? Maybe the BBC or media would be involved and not a literal war but more a war of power, a war of control and manipulation. Or maybe Revelations is not revealing the end at all, or the end is not as close as we think. Who knows?
