There are plenty of other reasons why people should post anonymously on the Internet. Safety is a number one concern. The reason I post anonymously is because when I started posting online, I was extremely naïve, and always posted my real name. I felt that I had nothing to hide, so why not?

I ended up being the victim of a crazy Internet stalker who hacked into my work email, and threatened me enough in real life, that we ended up getting the police involved.

Since then, my husband has insisted that if I participate on a message board, I do it anonymously.

I do have close associations here who know who I am in real life, and I'm certainly not ashamed of anything I've said here.

Those who know me would vouch that I'm not much different online than I am offline.

You aren't supposed to know about that! They also have overlays that reveal all of the messages Hamblin buries in his articles. "Metcalfe is a Butthead" was only a warmup. Just wait 'til you see "Scratch is a f**kwit." It all goes downhill from there.

Yes, yes, but those are not the reasons some here remain anonymous, and you know who I'm talking about. DCP doesn't seem to feel the need to put a brown paper bag over his head when he posts here, or anywhere else. His arch nemesis, Scratch, however, who claims to be a LDS, does.

And I don't mean that amateurs cannot be experts, only that they should not pose as, or allow the impression to exist that, they are such in the sense of professional training and expertise, as Metcalf has allowed to happen, wittingly or unwittingly. I only found out from Will recently that Metcalf was a software designer, not a textual critic who had no professional academic training in this area.

No one – other than you and DCP – even knew the names of the people involved. They were not humiliated.

You are a stranger to me. Your name means nothing. It may as well be a screen name. I don’t live in your community, I don’t know you, I don’t know anyone that you know in real life. You pretend that you have some sort of moral superiority because you use your real name, but it’s as meaningless as a screen name to strangers on the internet. Your real life reputation is at no more risk than GoodK’s father’s reputation was – or at least, until some busybodies decided to make sure GoodK’s father knew about it. Any humiliation he suffered was your fault.
