Did you mean "free" instead of "fee"? And why is that so surprising? I thought that was a given.

Yes, "free" tuition (sorry). I would be very surprised if the children of General Authorities receive free tuition. Maybe they do and it's just a perk of being a GA?

I would like to learn more about this and why McConkie felt he needed to ask ELW if his children could receive free tuition. This leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I can't wait to see the other documents.

Also, why in the hell did the Church give a man $5,000.00 for a "revelation that could improve space travel"? $5,000.00 was a lot of money back in the 1960's. Strange.

There are lots of intriguing entries in the index.

Here are a some others I find interesting:

Homosexuality: ELW fires Carl Fuerstner (Music) for homosexuality. Hires Reid Nibley

Reed Benson: “Is very immature, rash in his judgment” and can’t hold down a job.

Black Faculty: ELW didn’t want to hire black. Students might think “mingling” OK

Blacks at BYU: HBL: If granddaughter was engaged to a black, ELW w/b held responsible.

Brown, Hugh B.: ETB very concerned about his “socialistic tendencies.”

BYU Assets: ELW puts Idaho farm in separate corp. to hide assets from Y tax return.

Income Church: Church overspent its income in 1959 and 1960 ($85M in 1960)

Sacrament Cups: Company which sells them to Church is owned by “one of the Brethren”

Salaries at BYU: ELW based salary increases on percentage of tithing faculty members paid.

Skousen, Cleon: ELW: although he’s entertaining, he speculates too much (vivid imag.)

There are also some entries relating to the hiring of Richard Vetterli which caught my eye. The first two are from the 60's before Vetterli was being considered for a job (from what I can tell), the second two are several years later when Wilkinson was trying to get Vetterli hired as there were not enough conservatives in the Political Science dept. for his liking.

I have no idea what "plagiarism" is alluded to in that first entry. Richard Poll, as most of you remember, was the author of the famous Iron Rod vs. Liahona metaphor. Poll considered himself a liberal Mormon, Vetterli was an extreme conservative. So I have no idea what that is about. But I do think it interesting that Wilkinson thinks little of Vetterli's scholarship ("redundant") yet works hard advocating his hiring:

Vetterli, Rich.: Tries to explain his plagerism of Richard Poll’s thesis to ELW

Vetterli, Rich.: ELW: His book is faith-prom., large but not exhaus. research, redundant.

Vetterli, Rich.: ELW would like to get rid of some faculty to make room for Vetterli

Vetterli, Rich.: ELW speaks w/Cleon Skousen and DO trying to get Vetterli hired at BYU

It would have been $10,000 if the man had succeeded in his attempt to improve space travel to Kolob.

*Note: I've added Agent S's commentary to each blog entry so that s/he can introduce the material. More importantly with a herculean effort by the local missionaries, who were enlisted for around the clock scanning duty (and were paid handsomely with lemonade and club sandwiches), Agent S has scanned most of the document group focused on science and evolution. Once the commentary is completed the docs will be posted. I expect at least fifteen documents released on Tuesday or Wednesday, and perhaps more after that...

Clear out a couple weeks. You're going to have a bit added to the reading list. :)

I've been enjoying the Jack Adamson, Bond. You mentioned "Ape or Angel" to me; perhaps you remember he references an E. M. Forster short story in it, "The Celestial Omnibus." It's a charming little story and recommend it to all and sundry.

The newest group of documents is up. Here it is with Agent S's commentary concerning science/evolution. Of particular interest is the last document, which is Agent S's personal take on the issue he's documenting.

http://zackc.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/documents-6/

And the documents aren't over. Polygamy has been hinted at as a possible document issue.

edit* I'm getting some errors in loading so will reload. Might want to hold off til Tuesday.

edit2* Apparently it's just a couple documents that have issues, so feel free to look at docs while I work out the kinks.

edit3* After some reloads all docs should be good. I won't add to S's commentary, but it's interspersed with the doc pdfs.

I find that timing, and its coincidence with when the Church's books went from open to the public to being closed, to be rather fascinating. It certainly seems reasonable to think that the Church closed its books initially so that people would not learn that it was deficit spending and having financial troubles.

Thanks for this latest installment, Zack. I loved seeing JFS's "false doctrine" notation on Talmage's pamphlet.

I have to agree: these ELW diaries are incredible. One that struck me from Pt. II was the entry saying that "DOM interested in LDS colonizing in Iowa, Illinois, and throughout USA." Pretty creepy.
