Pol Pot?

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

OK Pol Pot might have been an athiest, but was what he did driven purely by atheism?

I don't believe that atheism had much to do with the Pol Pot regime and the unbelievable tragedy that occurred in Cambodia. Just his rustic and ignorant view of how egalitarianism should be implemented.

Most Western European countries have governments that refuse any religious connection. They might be better models.

The Khmer Rogue (like many Communist groups from the past) predicated their "social engineering" on a strict atheistic historical materialism.

Semantics.....

That is like saying the United States isn't a Christian state, it is a deformed Presbyterian state.

Semantics are important.

Atheism supports enthusiasm for life and overcomes existential fear.

Lenin, not very many I think. He didn't have the purges that Stalin had.

Stalin, over ten million, I think (didn't look it up). Not in the cause of atheism, though. Just because he was a paranoid jerk and with total power. You should read up on Stalin. A very interesting and scary guy.

While, Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao, etc were Atheists, I don't think that atheism was the central tenant that drove them to do what they did
