Great quotes, UD. I wonder if any of our vaunted mopologists can find a single statement from an official church publication renouncing this quote and announcing a change in doctrine. If not, presumably it would be apostasy for Romney to honestly differ from the Prophet, right?

Could a President Romney HONESTLY say that the Prophet's new
revelation has absolutely no effect upon his presidential decisions?

Or, turn the issue around on its head:

has announced that God commands the USA to bomb Iran.

Could a President Romney HONESTLY say that the Prophet's new
revelation has absolutely no effect upon his presidential decisions?

Politicians have religious rights, the same as any average citizen. Just so long as they are open and honest about them and not hypocritical and deceptive.

But should their religious opinions guide public policy?

If that is what they expressed when they ran for office, then YES! I want an honest candidate and not one who is simply a people pleaser...
