Regarding the harder: A friend introduced me to Disaronno Amaretto Have you tried it? I loved it. Oh and white Russian.
Liz,
I like Red wine too. Washington produces some excellent wine. Someday, I will go wine tasting at a local vinyard.
SP,
I have a friend here that knows so much about this stuff. He has been teaching me. One night, after dinner, he set out many different types of beer on the table and explained as we sampled. We don't drink often but when we do, we try to choose wisely.
Living here has been good.

Liz,
I've heard nothing but bad news about Coors, Miller, Bud, etc. Of course, I have not tried them, so I really can't compare.
I agree it takes getting used to. I feel it is like my experience with Greek salad. Once I got used to the feta and olives, I fell in love.
Ok, to the kitchen for me! I need to clean and make pie crust before church!

I think everyone's taste buds are just different. And yes, you can develop tastes for different things.
You've probably not sampled good beer then.
As with anything it's an acquired taste. if you fancy something refreshing on a hot day, try a Stella Artois shandy (two thirds Stella, one third lemonade) served very chilled.

Liz, I think red wine requires waaaaay more getting used to than a good beer.

I do like Mike's Hard Lemonade, so that is a good idea!

This is true.

Stella stands up well on it's own as a refreshing beer, if you ask me.

John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book 1, 1674,begins:
However, A. E. Housman, A Shropshire Lad, LXII, 1887 took a different slant:
Your mileage may differ.
OF Mans First Disobedience, and the Fruit
Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal tast
Brought Death into the World, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden, till one greater Man
Restore us, and regain the blissful Seat,
Sing Heav'nly Muse, that on the secret top
Of Oreb, or of Sinai, didst inspire
That Shepherd, who first taught the chosen Seed,
In the Beginning how the Heav'ns and Earth
Rose out of Chaos: ...
.... What in me is dark
Illumin, what is low raise and support;
That to the highth of this great Argument
I may assert Eternal Providence,
And justifie the wayes of God to men.
However, A. E. Housman, A Shropshire Lad, LXII, 1887 took a different slant:
Say, for what were hop-yards meant,
Or why was Burton built on Trent?
Oh many a peer of England brews
Livelier liquor than the Muse,
And malt does more than Milton can
To justify God's ways to man.
Your mileage may differ.

I've had Coors and Bud, and both are mass produced swill. Similar to some of the Canadian mass production brands: Molson Canadian, Labatt's Blue...These beers are widely consumed because the price point is right - a 6 pack of micro-brew can cost as much as a 12 of mass production. They are more affordable to the young college crowd.
Be on the look-out for pumpkin ales in the next month or so. Wonderful things! I've heard, in the USA, that Dogfish Pumpkin Ale is excellent.

Chap, you've just made my day. I will memorize this and use it as a toast!
