I don't like that. I don't think that is right.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2024 1:04 pmMissionaries are now being taught how to trawl social media to find people they can groom into letting missionaries into their homes. They’re using members Facebook connections and groups to slot in their leading questions etc. if you are “friends” with a serving missionary on any social media platform they are taking that as permission to feel free to target your non member contacts.
I find it very creepy. At least knocking on doors was honest and up front. But now, they use techniques akin to groomers and phishers. Similarly in person - offering to teach people English and then using those English lessons to start missionary conversations. It’s all a bit dishonest.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/10/us/m ... aints.htmlAndres Gonzalez, 19, stands on the balcony of his Los Angeles apartment, his hands in his suit pockets. It is his first week as a missionary, but today, instead of approaching people on the street, he is shooting a video that he will later post to social media.
After about a dozen takes, he is successful. “Hello! If you would like to learn more about Jesus Christ,” he says to the camera in Spanish, “contact me.”
I’m guessing it’s not really his apartment. As most missionaries have to live in relatively low-brow conditions, and certainly don’t have balconies with great views.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Yeah, I think it was consensual, but also I'm not entirely sure it was a healthy situation for him. Not that he was a victim. I don't know what happened afterwards, but it probably wasn't a good situation with his family and such for what was perfectly healthy and normal.Imwashingmypirate wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2024 10:33 amYour companion sounds like he was taking part in something consensual. Is there anything you would change about missions that might help young men and women?
I think missions are outdated and while they might get people more committed by further creating the other and binding them to the us vs. them, it also causes serious harm physically and mentally. I think in this case just have better young single adult wards with activities and stuff, which goes into the larger part of stop being so miserly with the member's money, Salt Lake has enough, they need to make church a community thing again, something for the members.

Re: LDS Missionary held on rape charges
To be honest, when I was a YSA, we had family home evenings with students, missionaries and non members, usually at ours. I moved in with other YSA students in my third year. The missionaries flirted with the non member visitors but ignored us lol. Which was fine I wasn't bothered. But just a bit surprising because I kind of thought they weren't supposed to do that. The amount of crying that happened when they weren't around because they fancied the same missionary was unreal. They'd buy them gifts too competing with each other. Like even football shirts. Was all a bit much really.Dwight wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 5:17 pmYeah, I think it was consensual, but also I'm not entirely sure it was a healthy situation for him. Not that he was a victim.
