“To institute polygamy” is too charitable. That was the retroactive justification after he got caught cheating.

Re: Interpreter needs a quarter million to finish Brother Brigham’s film
Speaking about the original letter, I haven't seen that much gratuitous bolding and underlining in a Mormon-related text since I read the Tanners' Mormonism: Shadow or Reality? several decades ago.drumdude wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2024 2:58 pmDear Interpreter Foundation Supporters,
The same quality film-making team that produced Witnesses, Interpreter’s highly successful and award-winning movie about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, is producing Six Days in August, a compelling movie about the succession crisis after Joseph Smith’s martyrdom. We seek your support to enable us to complete this movie and release it in theaters in October.
Here’s why this project is so important and why we need your support:
Six Days in August will portray the dramatic but relatively little known story of that crucial succession decision in 1844. It will show how Brigham Young and the quorum that he led came to be recognized by a large majority of Latter-day Saints as the Lord’s chosen leadership for the Church after the death of Joseph Smith.
This story is vitally important today. The members of the Quorum of the Twelve have led the Church, and senior apostles have presided over it, ever since those dramatic days in early August 1844. Attacks on the legitimacy of the Twelve’s assumption of leadership over the Church in 1844 are, whether deliberately or not, attacks on today’s apostolic authority.
We began filming in September 2023 at sites in Canada, upstate New York, and at the LDS Motion Picture Studios in Provo. We have recently finished filming our final scenes. Gifts from generous donors have paid for filming, but there are still considerable expenses to prepare Six Day in August as a finished project ready for theatrical release.
Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to help us raise the $256,000 we need to fund post-production efforts, associated with cutting raw footage, assembling that footage, standardizing and enhancing the color of the footage, adding music, dubbing, and sound effects.
We seek your support now to help us cross the finish line to bring this entertaining, informative, and inspiring story to hundreds of thousands of people.
Here is an entertaining video clip that features scenes from the movie and interviews with its actors.

I must admit that I am disappointed by the rash decision to take down the "entertaining" clip, but I expect that the Proprietor will provide an explanation shortly. The scene in which a fanboying Brigham Young and Heber Kimball meet Joseph Smith was rather painful, but some of the actor interviews were interesting. Actor Ted Bushman quotes his grandfather as saying, "All history is mythologized to some degree." Yes. I expect that Six Days will dial the mythologizing up to eleven. Will we see a blind man in Six Days loudly exclaiming that he sees Joseph Smith during Brigham Young's address? I hope so.

I find it surprising that, as far as I can tell, the Proprietor hasn’t posted a copy of the letter (with a working link to a film clip) on his personal blog for his many acolytes to read. Time is running short.
Separately, I’ve heard rumors that President Nelson will ask all church members at the upcoming October general conference to conduct a 10-day media fast (movies, television, social media, etc.) beginning October 7. That could damage prospects for the success of Six Days. (Some readers will remember that Nelson’s call for women to undergo a 10-day social media fast threw a wrench into plans to promote the independent LDS film, Jane and Emma.)

Tom, I've also heard (from a very credible source) about President Nelson's upcoming request to abstain from all media. It's almost like President Nelson knows how much Six Days sucks and is intentionally trying to keep members from watching it. I guess I'll be the lone member watching this film on opening day.Tom wrote: ↑Thu Jul 04, 2024 4:46 pmI find it surprising that, as far as I can tell, the Proprietor hasn’t posted a copy of the letter (with a working link to a film clip) on his personal blog for his many acolytes to read. President Nelson has all but guaranteed Six Days will have a disastrous opening weekend/week. I can't even imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth going on right now at the Interpreter Foundation.

True. I can easily imagine President Nelson murmuring, “Yes, all church members need to acknowledge my apostolic power and authority, but I’ll be damned if I let this train wreck of a talkie do anything to undermine my reign.”Everybody Wang Chung wrote: ↑Thu Jul 04, 2024 5:01 pmTom, I've also heard (from a very credible source) about President Nelson's upcoming request to abstain from all media. If you do go on opening day, say “hi” to John Donovan Wilson (who plays Brigham Young) for me. I always rib him about his cringey Spartan Air Solutions commercials:

If Hugh Grant picked up a role in the film, would it help or hurt the film's prospects?
We can't take farmers and take all their people and send them back because they don't have maybe what they're supposed to have. They get rid of some of the people who have been there for 25 years and they work great and then you throw them out and they're replaced by criminals.
