I think Dehlin shouldn't have called the cops on this childish meme. I don't think there is any real danger to Dehlin from this and I suspect reporting this to the cops is a way to bring attention to the video so Dehlin can play victim. It makes him look weak and plays a little bit into Kwaku's fantasy that somehow Dehlin is on the run.

I think the better strategy would have been to call it out for what it is, a sophomoric response to failing truth claims. Perhaps Dehlin could do a podcast discussing the overall failed strategy that TITS will turn out to be and have the inglourious basterds video as an example of how desperate the church is to stanch the bleeding. Kwaku is the student that continually interrupts class for attention. Shine the light on it and the others in the class will see what a clown he is.

It's not really up to anyone else to decide if the threatened person needs to report, though. Onlookers have the luxury of seeing this through a socio-political lens, when the target has to consider the possibility of actual danger.

I get it. He certainly has the right to report whatever. In this case, do you think the police will do anything? I doubt it as they have real crime to investigate and this is more of a civil matter at this point. Is there a real danger to Dehlin? No, even though there are crazy people out there that possibly could see the video and react in a criminal manner. But, how likely is that? Not very. Also, his reporting the stupid video to the police just gives it some currency that perhaps it shouldn't get. This wasn't the time to make any reports to the police as it makes Dehlin look like a frightened little school boy afraid to deal with a bully.

But I can sympathize with getting death threats. And sometimes nipping it in the bud at the beginning is an important part of preventing a trend. I imagine even moreso for a public figure.
