It baffles me why anybody would so easily dismiss the power of belief, if there's a good chance they could physically benefit from it and avoid the nasty side effects of so many medications. You do have some choice on what you focus on - and what thoughts you repeat - which is essentially what belief is.

If faith leads one towards a greater good and does no harm...then there is no foul. Definitely preferable to medication. Obviously, however, medications have their place and should not be ignored/rejected if needed.

One should be aware of side effects of both faith and medication.

I think that if folks are using their agency and choosing SSM, then yes, it's part of the Father's plan here on this earth. He has allowed for this possibility along with many other possibilities. Agency/choice has many iterations...and God has allowed for them all. We're not all carbon copies of each other.

I don't know. God will be the judge. But my inclination is to think that with three kingdoms of glory available, there are going to be a LOT of folks living in a state of grace/salvation/happiness and have a relationship with God.

Again, as I've mentioned, I believe that there in purpose beyond the here and now. Eternal Progression plays right into that.

Dear Dr Shades,

To protect the original thread, subject to Dr W’s approval, can I suggest it be cut off at the end of page 13 and all subsequent posts be moved to a new thread? We seem to have gone off topic since then.

*I won’t be posting again on this thread till the latter pages are split off into a new thread.

“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

We have, you didn’t get away with it then and you’re not being allowed to get away with it now.

I'm not trying to "get away" with anything. But I can only say what I can say. There are times when I come to the end of what I can say without 'making stuff up'. And, as you know, I have a thing against that.

But, there are times when I say more than what I could say before. Life experience, reading, thinking, etc.

Isn't that the way we all move forward?

Dr. Shades,
I think pg. 14 should not be cut off from the original thread. I had some comments which I made on that page that I believe to be directly applicable to the thread. Anything after pg. 14, fine.

That works for me too, of course subject to DrW's approval. He already started another (also very interesting!) thread on the subsequent topic so it seems appropriate.

Pg. 14 works better, I think.

Dr. Shades,

I have no objection to splitting this thread up, as some have suggested, should you decide to do so

As Lemmie mentioned, the topic of human brains having evolved to be highly susceptible to religious belief, including a more detailed description of some of the mechanisms involved, has been taken up on Doc Cam's thread with, "- Hard wired for belief or not" in the title.

DrW
David Hume: "---Mistakes in philosophy are merely ridiculous, those in religion are dangerous."

DrW: "Mistakes in science are learning opportunities and are eventually corrected."

Totally.

I'm simply suggesting that the cut off be at the end of page 14 rather than pg. 13 for the reason I've already expressed.

Thanks,
MG
