I was out of book of Abraham Studies by this time so I can't recall seeing this thread. So thank you for bringing this back out this is critical. I mean I am so blissfully ignorant of so much I can't hardly grasp it. And yet I was so cocksure and arrogant of my point of view. So thanks once again for bringing yet more background out that for me personally is essential to give me the bigger context. I simply didn't have it. Old threads like this deserve to be better known. I really really hope all of this apologetic Shenanigans does not affect Steve Smoot in his doctoral egyptology schooling. That kid is smart. That he went into egyptology is utterly stupefying to me. I can't help but think that is a complete waste of time. I stayed in his house one weekend when I went to a fair conference years ago and his library was truck full of LDS apologetic materials and he had read it all at that young age very impressive. But I really hope he's not going into egyptology in order to try to defend the Joseph Smith papyri. If so he's in for a seriously rude shock and awakening. He's going to throw hundreds of thousands of dollars away for nothing when he could do something much more constructive like get a PhD in mathematics or engineering or something that useful. Egyptology? Honestly now of what possible use is that in this day and age?

A PhD from the University of Toronto should not cost hundreds of thousands. There's pretty good funding there. He may even be getting tuition waiver and enough money to live on (barely).

That's how research graduate degrees (as opposed to professional degrees like MBAs) work in a lot of places. You stop paying for school, and start getting paid (a bit). There may not be as much money in egyptology as there is in physics, but generally graduate degrees cost much less than undergrad.

The main cost of a PhD is the opportunity cost of the time you spend. You'll be in school for another 3-6 years after most people your age have started working, and the skills you learn may not be marketable. If your only career option is academia, you'd better really want to do that, because in many fields it's a good job market year if there's a job opening. In the world. One job.
