I think it's still pretty much the same (but unless you work for a Utah-based company you're not likely to get the 24th off).

It's a fairly divisive day, because instead of it being an actual statewide holiday, it's really a Mormon holiday observed by the state, which annoys many non-Mormons I know, and makes them feel like outsiders.

The weird thing about Utah is that very few people consider January 4th to be a day to be celebrated, if they even know what the day is. (Hint: Statehood Day)

The last time I was up that way about two years ago, there was a parade on the 4th in Tropic (which consisted of a fire truck, and 4 cars ;-)).

I admittedly don’t think I’ve ever been up that way around the 24th though (if I have, it would have been when I was still in school, which means I was too busy hiking to even know what day it was).

And of course, when I was up that way I made sure to participate in a 4th of July race at the H-ville park (they've upgraded to toys, candy, and quarters)… and naturally my cousins (and brother), with more Johnson genes than I, won.

Joey's claim here seems to clash a bit with the new thread entitled "A Global Church?"

Our 24th parades consisted of kids in pioneer dress, either riding bikes with crepe paper and playing cards in the spokes, or pulling their Radio Flyer wagons with hoops covered with a white sheet to approximate a covered wagon. Occasionally someone would hook up a flat-bed trailer to a tractor so they could sit on some bales of hay and wave.

In my day, the Barker boys had a lock on the foot races. Very speedy. I always settled for the 'participant' nickel, rather than the winner's dime.

By the way, your GF was a frequent speaker at the flag-raising ceremony, regaling us with WW2 stories.

One of my favorite July 24th stories: my sister lived in Laie, Hawaii, for a few years in the 70s. She said the kids there would put on a similar parade on Pioneer Day. That seemed very strange to me.

Topping to keep alive through the 24th!!!

Or at least until Peterson becomes remotely knowledgable about sports or active lifestles to know what UFC stands for!! It is after all,the fastest growing sport in the country.

I'm guessing more people are interested in it than what he would claim is "the fastest growing church"!

Perspective Peterson!

Just wanted to give a "hey" big warm up greeting for the 24th this friday. If memory is accurate, should be a BIG blast up there in Utah. Miss the rodeo. This is the place!!

Also wanted to give Peterson a big "hey" since we last spent the weekend in Vegas. He w his Saturday morning talk on the Book of Mormon at Ballys. Me with my golf and UFC 100 outing.

I would love to have Mr. Peterson chime in here and tell us about the attendance for his gig on Saturday morning! I saw it! But I'll let him speak to the board and rationalize it!!!!

UFC was huge. Unfortunately, as my wallet knows, so was my golf score that weekend!!

What do Danite enforcers do, Will?

They enforce, Slim.

Alright, let's keep this thread clean.

How many people were there at my presentations, Joey?

How many presentations was I involved with? Can you describe them? How did they differ?

The Big fireworks will be in Liberty Park (one of Brigham Young's properties) on Pioneer Day.

Pioneer Day is only actually celebrated by 3 states:

1. Utah - Because they made it.

2. Missouri - Because they left.

3. California - Because they never made it.
I think it would be morally right to lie about your religion to edit the article favorably.
