I don't think Mak is smearing the black young athletes. I do think he has a serious bug up his rear about Smith's article. I think Mak is being overly defensive of BYU, and sees Smith's article as a threat, and so he defends against it.

I think Smith is probably too hung up on racism. I haven't read his book, but I listened to his Mormon Stories podcast before, and I had this impression then too. He'd probably say that since I'm not black, I have no freaking clue. He may be right about that, so I reserve my judgment about Smith. I do think that his article shows some problems that BYU brings upon itself and some of its students, even if perhaps for not exactly the reasons Smith is claiming.

I don't appreciate the implication that I'm being racist, Scratch, and I won't be sticking around to hear whatever asinine rationalization you come up with to explain yourself. I'm sick and tired of having to defend myself from your idiocy while everyone else just sits around and watches in silence. This board isn't worth that.

If it helps, I don't agree with Scratch. I think what he said was uncalled for, and I condemn it.

Thank you Setbag.

That's too bad that some posters here send some LDS packing not long after they come to contribute. Mak had some very good things to add to this topic, one which is very near to my heart in fact. How pathetic to take things in that direction.

Mak, if you don't want to read the whole "wall of text" that our conversation evolved into, let me summarize it with this one little question: if sexually active, or boozing, or coffee-drinking LDS kids can't get into BYU, what's wrong with the suggestion that BYU ask potential recruits if they are sexually active, or drink, and wish them luck at some other institution, and decline to recruit them, if the answer is yes?

If sexually active, drinking LDS kids can't get into BYU with just a mere promise to stop doing these things once they get to BYU, why does it make sense for non-LDS kids to get into BYU upon such a mere promise?

It's incredibly difficult to become completely celibate, including no masturbation, once one has become sexually active. The church knows this. Why do they even put non-LDS kids, without the same religious context to understand why BYU emphasizes this in the way it does, into the position of having to commit to this, on pain of embarassing dismissal from school, loss of scholarship, and the inability to take their skills somewhere else where they might be a better fit? This makes no sense at all.

Don't get me wrong, I think its an interesting point you raise, but in another sense, I don't see the harm in trying. As long as they are upfront, I realize that is disputed, I don't see it as a problem. BYU"s thinking is its good for the guys/gals they recruit in the long run, or at least potentially so.

So why won't BYU accept the promise of a sexually active or boozing LDS student that they will stop having sex and drinking as soon as they get to BYU?

Quit being a little titty-baby. Engage the posters you want. Ignore the ones you don't. It's freakin simple.

Also, I hereby condemn Sethbag's condemnation of Scratch's post. (Hope that doesn't hurt your pwecious wittle feewings, titty-baby.)
