I agree with you 100% on the issue of antiquities and looting. What I take exception to is the assumption that he is guilty, and other posters' decision to turn this into a black mark on all LDS academics who lead tours. That is totally unfair.

In the article, it says that Lund was caught twice. The first time he was released (maybe a way for the Israelis to give him a brake). The second time he was trying to fly out of Israel before they could catch him. They did, never the less. The Israeli courts will decide (I'm guessing that he will not go back to attend).

It is clear that he was selling something to those tourists. They were found with the artifacts when going through Israeli customs and named Lund as the person that sold the items to them. Lund was up to something.

I agree that it does not implicate anyone else.

Well, Quasimodo, perhaps an anecdote is in order here. Did you happen to see Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? 'Cause if you did, I'm sure you remember the fantastic opening flash-back sequence, where Young Indy (played by River Phoenix) is a boy scout exploring with his troop in southern Utah. He and one of his fellow scouts wind up down in a cave where they come across a group of treasure-diggers. These men (i.e, the treasure diggers) unearth a dazzling gold cross--an artifact which apparently once belonged to the explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.

Well, this being an action picture, Young Indy steals it and a chase ensues, etc. But when the leader of the treasure-diggers at last confronts Indy, Indy rather indignantly says to him, "That's Coronado's cross! It belongs in a museum!"

Could it be that Lund was simply viewing himself as a kind of aging, Mopologetic Indiana Jones, helping to bring these artifacts back to where they "really belong"?

I love your anecdote. Maybe Lund does see himself as a young Indiana Jones (not that young anymore). It could be that Lund felt that all these artifacts should be back in the "corridor". I'm guessing, though, that it has more to do with adding to his retirement fund.

I think it will be interesting to see if Mr. Lund follows the 12th Article of Faith and abides by his agreement to return to Israel and face the upcoming charges.

If Mr. Lund refuses to return to Israel for trial, that could potentially be grounds for disclipinary action for several reasons. Also, it would be a real PR nightmare for the Church if Mr. Lund refuses to return to Israel and account for his actions.

No, his guilt or innocence is not a matter of satisfaction for me. I'm willing to admit that there is a chance that Lund is totally innocent of all accusations. I think that it is unlikely, though.
